Evening all- I'm exhausted and just grabbing a quick coffee break.
Kidcat, forgot to say yesterday, my thoughts are with you at this time. It's awful losing a pet isn't it?
To the other poster who's Dad's poorly, hope he gets better soon. Way to go for being able to cook from scratch still!

WRT Halloween. I've had to waver on this. We never celebrated it as children. Against our religion. However, as I grew up I realised none of our friends did either because they just weremn't allowed out begging :). I don't view it so much as an anti Christian thing but local churches do celebrate around here now on or around halloween by having a heroes party. Now that, I am quite willing to allow the kids along to.
I don't allow my children to go trick or treating because I don't want them terrorising neighbours. Elderly people can get quite upset and worried about this sort of thing. I've had many a bag of flour thrown all over me when I've opened the door to trick or treaters as a teenager (despite actually givbing them treats :().
I was very pleasantly surprised and a little bit embarassed this evening. Mad busy night. Dropped DS to his Grandmas as she was taking him over to the party in the park. Brought DD home, did the washing, had breakfast whilst preparing tea and cooking up some kidney beans. Then let DD sort her costume out for her starting guides on a halloween party night :). Sat down for tea at 17.50 and door bell rings. It kept ringing so I had to go and answer it and there was a group of 13 ish year old lads. "Trick or treat!" :o.
Well, we've never had them that early and I was mortified. Not a thing in the house as we were about to go out. DD to Guides, DS is already out. DH to fetch DS and Me to drop DD at guides and then come to work. "I explained I didn't have anything in as we were all going out this evening and apologised. Their faces fell a little but they just said "That's OK" and went off. I did feel bad though. I've never been caught with nothing in the house before unless the trick or treaters have had it all.
Ah well. Hope I don't get home to a trashed house from other disgruntled trick or treaters in the morning.

  • OldTractor- Thats the long term plan for us.

We live in a farm cottage at the moment but we have a house in Yorkshire we rent out. When the time is right we will sell it and buy a smallholding somewhere :-)

:) Morning all and ((hugs)) to V8monkeyboy regarding your poorly Dad. It's so exhausting when our loved ones are ill in hospital; we're scared and trying to be there for them but everyday life doesn't stop and we can end up buckling under the strain ourselves. Please remember to take care of yourself as well; my cousin's OH ran his car off the road (whiplash only thank goodness) when he was too-ing and fro-ing from her hospital bed for weeks in end, after doing a day's work and looking after their kids. Poor man was exhausted.

((kidkat)) I've walked that walk with beloved pets and it doesn't get any easier with practice. Deepest sympathy.

Re pneumonia jabs, I had one of these a couple of years ago at the same time as I had the flu jab at the GP. They just asked if I'd ever had one (nope) and banged one in. I'm middle-aged not elderly but have chronic illnesses which qualify me for the flu jab. Anyway, a few weeks ago at this year's flu clinic the nurse asked if I'd had the pneumonia jab and and when I said I had she told me you only ever need to have it once. Don't know if that is true but it'd be great if it was lifelong protection, wouldn't it?

Well, the lady who fell down the stairs and whose OH was made to take her 15 miles into hospital himself rather than they would send an ambulance (Mum's neighbour of 40 years) has been in hopsital all this time- several weeks now. They've transferred her from the district hospital to the big specialist teaching hospital where she's had surgery on her brain and will have to have some more done but even her OH doesn't know exactly what is wrong with her. Mum and another neighbour visited her before the surgery and she was sitting up in a chair and lucid about some things and confused about others. Worrying times.:(

I've been thinking about possessions and wanting to have fewer of them in recent months, which is a trend which has been a lifetime in the making so have been hanging out in minimalist websites and decluttering websites and have been giving stuff away on Freecycle/ charity shops/ friends if they want it/ re-purposing or recycling where appropriate.

Does anyone else find this incredibly satisfying? I've Freecycled several things in the past few days, things which were lurking in cupboards and serving no purpose, and the recipients were thrilled to bits. I mean, JAM JARS were the hottest property going.:D

:p Now, all I have to do is bite the bullet and tackle the clothes. Tis truly amazing how much you can fit in one chest-of-drawers and shortish hanging rail. I swear those hung clothes are holding themselves vertically by compression only.:o

Gollum the Slowcooker is having a couple of days off as I am planning to use MrsVP's recipe to roast one of my turk's turban squashes tonight; would've done it last night but didn't have the right seasonings. And Henri D'Vac is sulking in the cupboard because I wouldn't let him suck up those spindly gangly spiders. I'd always wondered why my flat only ever has that particular kind and then I read somewhere that this species are cannibals of other spider species (!):eek::eek: The vicious life and death wars which are going on all around me and I had no idea. Makes me wonder what the silverfish whic I occasionally find in the bathroom are doing?

(At this point the GQ random-image-generator conjures up an image of Mafiosi Silverfish* sucking on cigars and ordering "hits" on the earwigs...............yeah, haven't metabolised my medication yet.:o)

Oh, and I stopped procrastinating long enough to finish mending a shirt which my brother has cast-out and which I will use for gardening. I have to be very careful on my lottie as I am such a stylish gardener that birds mistake me for a scarecrow and perch if I stand still for too long........:rotfl:

Have a good day, everyone, catch up later.

    * This is a libel, actually; silverfish are totally harmless. Roaches, well, I could quite believe that they'd run protection rackets, the filthy beggars. Probably in cahoots with pest control firms..........;)

Thats made me smile - yesterday when we told DD about the cat she cried for ages, later she requested a new cat - when asked why she cried cos Sooty was the one that caught spiders!!:rotfl:

Having a waiting day today as the crem are supposed to be here today and also the fridge freezer is supposed to arrive - I say supposed because apparently its being shipped from Italy with a courier who will only leave it on the path, and I am refusing to accept it unless they bring it into the house. OH is off work in bed violently ill( I think he is fretting over the cat personally:eek::rotfl:)so useless at lifting in a full size fridge freezer and its bigger than I am so I am not even willing to consider.
