  • Evenin' all,

I haven't posted for ages but have been lurking and picking up tips, laughing and sympathising.

I'm feeling a bit down at the moment as dad was taken ill last week with a really bad urinary infection which has gone into his kidneys. This led to him becoming very confused and appearing to suffer from dementia. He was so ill, he badly hurt himself trying to get home and the nurses had to sedate him. My sister and I spent the last week sitting with him in 12 hour shifts to orientate him, and I'm knackered from that!

On top of that he's got an aortic aneurysm which may need to be operated on and I've had to cancel an interview tomorrow as I have to see the vasular surgeon with him tomorrow.

The OH is being particularly unsympathetic and my mum is struggling to cope so is letting my sister and I take most of the strain.

Sorry to go on - needless to say that there has been little in the way of money saving or OS going on, but I have made dinner most nights from scratch. Am hoping to bake some pumpkin biscuits tomorrow and am then having a 'day of the dead' celebration with a friend as we missed out on Halloween together.

    Hope everyone is ok.

    T x

v8monkeyboy - doing all you are for your dad and still cooking from scratch - well done you and your sis. I'm sure your mum appreciates what you are doing - it must be hard for her to acknowledge your dad's situation and still cope.

we had a lovely time trick or treating - I din;t let ds go this year as I think at 13 he's too old - its for little ones for me.

Much as I love the fun, dress up, festive nature of Halloween I also love this poem which really resonates with me on all that thin veil between life and death stuff!

Sorry to hear about your dad V8monkeyboy.

I managed to make a pie for tea out of yesterday's leftovers and another portion for DS lunch tomorrow.

I went on a survey site and did some surveys before. At the beginning of the year I was really motivated and did loads and got two £15 Amazon vouchers but then lost interest. Well I cashed one of them in for a couple of books for DS for Christmas that then only cost me just over a pound, so my motivation has come back slightly. Too late for this year but an early start made for next year if I keep it up. Wish I had remembered earlier though cos I have already ordered and received books for DSil from Amazon too and still have a voucher. Will have to try and think of something for someone else.

Well I've been trick or treating tonight with DD (2 1/2) - it was her first time and she had a wonderful time. Our village seems to do Halloween in a big way but you only knock on the doors with a pumpkin or spooky halloween decorations outside. One wonderful woman answered the door in full witchy costume and stayed completely in character the whole time we were there! There was a whole lot of us from little DD to my friend's autistic teenager and the older ones were making sure the littlies were included. One told my DD to knock on the door so she stood in front of the door and shouted "knocking" which gave us all the giggles. There was a real party atmosphere about the village and loads of houses had decorations up, quite a few people even answered the door wearing witchy hats too. We were never allowed to go as kids as it was "tantamount to begging" and I wouldn't have taken DD if we still lived in town but was different (and lovely) in a small and very community minded village.

Change of subject but does anyone use soap nuts? Are they good and do they help if you are allergic?
DD developed examer (sp) or psoriasis or something and the powder I was using seems to have made it worse. She seems okay with liquid but was wondering if soap nuts would be better? Esther x

Hi, I used soap nuts for quite a while, I really can't remember now why I stopped to be honest.

I do recall that after using them for quite a few washes, about a months worth at, say, three washes a week, they tended to break up, so you ended up with bits of nuts all over the floor when you opened the door of the washing machine.

I seem to remember they worked well though.

I tend to use basic/value washing powder now with the odd bag of soda crystals mixed in.

Thanks Linda 32. I'm wondering whether it would help my daughters psoriasis, or ecxma or however you spell it. I have taken down the address to get a sample, so we can try them out. Esther x

    Hi again,

I can't help with that I'm afraid as we (myself and OH) seem to be okay with whatever I choose to use. Whatever is cheapest knowing me :D

However, my Mum does have psoriasis, she says she can only use Fairy Liquid. Anything else, she says "cuts her hands to shread" She never has worn gloves.

So I wonder if finding something the suits is the key, easier said than done, I guess.
