  • Mini non serious rant - Hallowe'en in an old pagan/celtic tradition, and trick or treating comes from here NOT the Usa. Its a centuries old tradition, which predates the USA. :)

I'm sat here with all the lights on waiting for the trick or treaters, I like the ones who come round early, they are all the littles, later on it will be the bigger ones from school who all look surprised & say 'Hello Miss, what are you doing here?' I'll keep giving out sweets til I run out or until I fall asleep.

I hope these cats who are bringing 'gifts' into the house are fitted with bells on their collars. I hate nature being attacked by cats.

OK Rats are an exception, but what if they caught a rare dormous, or our lovely garden birds :(

I have never had a cat as a pet as im a dog and bird lover, we always had dogs in our family from way back........

But I dont like to see any birds getting caught by cats......earlier this year lots of people noticed their cats went missing, and when some of them returned home they were very ill, so many people took their cats to the vets to find that they had been poisend by drinking antifreeze, apparentlly cats like the sweet taste of antifreeze because it tastes sweet...............what a terrible way to die.............

The media soon jump on the news of what caused their deaths and publish it, where I think they shouldnt say what caused the deaths because it gives cat haters ideas how to rid their gardens of unwanted cats........

I go away for a few days break and come back to the old thread closed and I certaintly had to hunt this new thread down, and its already 46 pages down.. N o wonder I vever get to catch up on the threads they move so fast..........:) No trick or treaters here we are out too far away from our small town so children dont come out this far......

Change of subject but does anyone use soap nuts? Are they good and do they help if you are allergic?
DD developed examer (sp) or psoriasis or something and the powder I was using seems to have made it worse. She seems okay with liquid but was wondering if soap nuts would be better? Esther x

    Hi Esther,

I haven't tried them myself, but this thread has lots of opinions on using soapnuts and some links to websites where you can get free samples:

Just seen on our local news that memorial plaques from cenotaphs are being pinched to get their scrap value by unscrupulous and (insert swear word) Shakes head in utter disbelief.

Thanks for the lesson on differences between trick or treaters. It confuses me a lot and my ignorance leads to just hate the whole damn night. We're getting the older ones now. They hammer on the porch door and some of them even have the cheek to batter on the living room window.

I wish I was like some of you, all cosy in the middle of a field!
  • I have tried soap nuts and have 2 quite large bags of them. We are in a hard water area and they never lathered. They may have worked, it was hard to tell really as the washing never came out that well, whatever I used. In the end DH revolted and requested proper washing powder.

In this area children are only allowed to trick or treat at houses which are displaying a lit pumpkin. Makes Halloween quite civilised really. :)

We have the old fashioned turnip out of one of the local farmers field instead of pumpkins - they were never heard of when we were kids, and dont cost three pounds! The 'guisers' here age from about three to thirteen, and always sing a song or recite poetry - if they dont they dont get a sweet. You do get some cheeky chaps asking for money but they are chased! Its also been a tradition too to have haggis tatties and neeps on halloween, to use up the scrapings from inside the turnip!

Taurus - it could be that because you are already seriously under the weather that the vaccinations have had a greater effect on you. Presumably next year you will be a lot better and your body will cope with them better as well. Didn't know you could have a pneumonia vaccine - believe me any side effects from that would be way less than having pneumonia itself - it took me over a year to fully recover from it, and I was only in my early forties at the time.

In my childhood in Yorkshire Halloween was acknowledged but not acted on - the big deal was 4th November - mischief night. No treats requested, just a practical joke or two.

The only trick played on me today was perpetrated by a parsnip - I was tugging hard to get it out of the ground when OOF! Parsnip flew out of the ground and I ended up on my backside in the raised bed. Got my revenge though - it was chopped and roasted to go with my tea :D

    Bah humbug :rotfl:

I've just written that on my facebook status! Great minds and all :rotfl:

I don't like trick or treating at all, the only time my kids have ever been allowed to do it was a couple of years ago when we were on a campsite and it was an organised activity so everyone knew the kids were coming and were all prepared, and then the campsite had organised games and fireworks.

My 2 have always thought i was mean to not let them go but i always said it's like begging and i don't like it. I know that it originated here but it all seems so commercial these days.

DD has gone to her swimming club with a batch of halloween - y cup cakes that she has made.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
