Well, I set off with good intentions yesterday to do some Christmas shopping (if I say it quietly it will be further away!) however it didn't go quite as planned.
Firstly it was dreadful weather and just as I got out of the car at the garden centre my hat blew off and my hair then blew straighth across my face and stuck to my carefully glossed lips. When the nice elderly gentleman handed me back my soggy hat, which he had retrieved from a very big puddle, he looked at me like I was from Mars. Well given I was pushing back the hair from around my eyed to see him I can't imagine what I looked like!
The garden centre was manic, queues everywhere so I didn't buy anything. I did notice though that the big bags of bird nuts which I thought were a ridiculous price in Costco (£22) were £49 in Dobbies:eek::eek::eek::eek: My feathered residents will be experiencing nouvelle cuisine this winter I think.
I then ventured into Mr A to get a birthday cake for hubby - I'm not sure how impressed he was with the giant lemon daisy but all the other cakes were far to big for what we needed. Next year I must make a sponge in advance.
I've had a day of mending - several hems, numerous buttons and now hubby has appeared with a pauir of hi viz trousers which need a new zip. That's beyond my sewing skills though so SIL will do them in return for a loaf from my bread maker. I made french bread in it for the first time last week which was very tasty. So far, so good. I'm wondering what sort of festive breads I could make in it - ideas on a postcard please:)
I've just finished putting together a gift for my friends daughter's birthday. It's been done on a bit of a shoestring with lots of sample sized shower gels and lotions from Molton Brown and L'Occitane and a few pieces from Clinique and Estee Lauder "gifts" which my sister passed over to me. I did buy some body butter and a huge shower puff thing to fill it out and now it's in a nice (also recycled) box it looks fab. I hope she likes it - I'd have been delighted with lots of little bits and pieces at that age.
I'm having dinner guests on the 23rd and beginning to plan the menu. I usually have two desserts - was thinking of creme caramel for one of them - does anyone know how far in advance I could make it?
I'm starting to ramble so I'm off to pore over my recipe books for inspiration - have a good evening all.0 -

One of my favourite xmas presents that I received as a teenager was from my nan. She covered a box in an offcut of wallpaper and filled it with toiletries that she'd bought throughout the year. Bubble bath, bath salts, soaps, a flannel etc. I loved that present and really appreciated it.0 -
 Last time I was on a train was 20 years ago
I need to get to Stanmore with DS2 for his check up on Tuesday and with Dads eyesight deteriorating due to the cataracts and a stupidly late appointment (which would mean driving both ways in the dark) I'm contemplating taking him on the train instead.
Our local station goes straight through in an hour to Elstree and Borehamwood(compared to a 2-3 hr drive,27 miles up the north circular/south circular thru hanger lane) and its a short hop in a cab from there BUT
DS2 is worried he may have to stand (he can't do this due to his back etc)
Where do I even buy tickets nowadays lol I lead a quiet life and travel mainly by taxi/in our car with the boys due to their issues.Do they still have ticket booths or do I have to get an oyster thing :rotfl:
Any regular train travellers here who can advise wether its a daft idea or not please:D

I've used The Trainline to buy tickets before. You can reserve seats too. I've always bought them a while in advance though and have the tickets sent to me, but as it's Tuesday that you're travelling, that option won't be available. You might be able to collect your tickets at the station though.0

Serial lurker here... just posting about SAD and light alarms - I have to get up at 5am during term time and for winter I have a small table lamp with a low watt energy saving bulb in, and put it behind the curtains on the windowsill. It's on a timer so that it comes on about 25 minutes (I found that best after much experimentation) before I have to get out of bed. It's exactly like a dawn to my brain and I have very little trouble waking up, compared to if I don't use it.
I'm now thinking maybe I'll get a very low wattage bio bulb to try in it, thanks for the info on here.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

Hello folks - everybody must be having a busy Sunday!!!
I am absolutely shattered today. Was up and out early, then took DDs for lunch at carvery nom nom nomand not long been back - managed to relight the fire from embers that were glowing from last night! Just as well really as I have no firelighters left, no kindling and I just can't get heatlogs or coal to light by just paper...
Didn't manage to get out and cut up the broken pallets but will do that tomorrow whilst DDs are at school. I do resent burning bought wood when I have a free supply of it
The plan of getting some more hens is moving forward. Not sure whether to buy a cheap incubator and hatch some eggs as that will be lovely for DDs to see, or choose some POL hens, or ex-battery..... Favourite is to hatch some but could end up with all cockerals... and what does one do with a cockeral or a few cockerals? (no, I couldn't eat them! well, I could if someone else did the messy bits!)
I am going to make some raised beds with some of the better pieces of pallets - I have loads of compost that I didn't use in the summer so will top them up with that. Can't wait to get planting in Spring :rotfl:
Can't believe I can even think about Spring!!! I am usually so beaten up by SAD this time of year that Spring seems like a lifetime away!!! :T
Right, must go and wash the uniforms ready for tomorrow, and stoke the fire
Have a lovely, warm and snuggly evening everybody :AMorning, Frugal, re getting eggs and hatching them, you do run a real risk of getting boys. One of my cousins runs a flock of about 30 Light Sussex and when she started with bought-in eggs to hatch she had one batch with all cockerels and the second batch was mostly boys, too. Took her 3 goes to get sufficient hens hatched. As to what to do with them, let's just say that the young cockerel who flew spurs-first at her OH and ripped his outer ear to pieces was invited to Sunday lunch that week and he apparently had what might be termed the starring role......;)

Is this a sort of chatty thread? I am not serious enough for the other one - I am starting a budget / frugal thing in January as it is going to be one of my (MANY) resolutions!
Currently working on learning skills that I should probably be proficient in at my age. But I'm not! I am learning baking, gardening, sewing and knitting. Knitting is going very slowly though. I want to learn cookery (full meals) and sewing clothes and things for the home. I am a little old fashioned and my friends think I am crazy but I love to put a pretty apron on and get on with cleaning or ironing or anything that needs doing.0 -
D&DD - if you order tickets online you can usually pick them up at the station but you need to have the card you bought them on and the reference number.
Whether the train will be standing room only depends on the time and how busy the route is. When my back was very bad I used a stick, and just occasionally people would give up their seats for me. I could walk without the stick... It was more to prevent people getting too close and knocking me as my balance wasn't great, and also gave me something to hang on to if I did need to stand on buses and trains.0 -

POL definitely wins hands down for me, even though it's more expensive to start. I knew I couldn't cope with 'dealing with' the boys, and if you get all hens then all you get are yummy eggs
IF you were thinking of buying an incubator anyway...think POL will probably come out about the same.
