    Morning Everyone :)

GQ I can't sew for toffee and I apologise if this makes no sense, but how about a strip of fabric sewn on the inside of the top of the sleeve and a button on the inside to pull up the cuff and one on the outside so that when you roll up the sleeves the strip of fabric folds over the roll and then fastens. I'm not sure if it would work, but I've seen shirts with the fabric that folds over and fastens.
:D Aha, both you and Softstuff have the same idea. Thank you both. I have seen this before so know exactly what you mean but for some reason I had forgotten it. It's one more option to consider.

With my other gardening shirt- a Levi Silvertab bought unworn from a jumble-sale, I ended up removing the cuffs altogether, opening up the sleeve seam to create a new placket (the edges of which I bound with bias tape) and then pin-tucked the fabric back into the cuffs. It's the tidiest solution IMO but proportionally more work.

I've been rushed off my feet with hospitals, dentists and doctors this week and got more next week and the week after..they all seem to come together for some reason!

Trying to figure out how to make some room in the freezer as I've been cooking some batches of dinners and freezing them so at least we come home to a nice meal but running out of space due to my blackberry and raspberry bushes being so productive this year!!

I can make some more jam tomorrow but need to use up around 20 bags of each  any suggestions???

I'll do some leathers but I only have 5 trays for the dehydrator.

That should only leave me around 25 bags of each for the winter then :rotfl:

I've been cooking off a mixture of rasps, blackberries and apple to make a 'compote' type thing for topping porridge. Just do enough for two - three days at a time as it only takes a few minutes. I'm mindful of the fact that earlier this year I had my freezer break down and all my fruit defrosted - so this time it's getting eaten first:rotfl:
  • re shirts that are too long in the sleeve - can't you make / adapt a pair of cufflinks (and girlie then up a bit) and just make fresh holes to take the links ?

    just an idea :D

GQ - easier than unpicking the cuffs is to cut a slice out of each sleeve and stitch back together to form a sleeve the right length for you.

Even simpler - move the cuff button so the cuff fits snugly to your wrist

And even simpler than that - do nothing except button the cuff then fold it back on itself - and pushed up your arm this should stay pushed up.

Keep the sleeves rolled up with a couple of postie's rubber bands or a bit of elastic sewed into a band of the right size - keep in shirt pocket.

Can you tell I've had to do this? :D Grandad's collarless sanforized cotton shirts lasted for years as decorating smocks and nightshirts.

Well I have to apologise for not posting after finding you all again but lifes events take over and "me time" gets erroded

But now I have my first cold in 3 years and feel so awful that even contemplating anything more strenuous then getting the fire lit is beyond me I've time to catch up and post

Illness is the theme here ATM with my stepdad in the hospital now for a week and the MIL needing 24 hr a day nursing at home. Hubby was on the phone to me last night saying he will prolly have to pack in work to go take his turn nursing his mum. Obviously that's going to put a huge strain on our finances as he is the only one working but then it's his mother and he wants to do his share. My offers of moving down and doing a couple of days a week are being resisted as I'm not "family". That's not a reflection on how I'm thought of usually just the MIL is a
very old fashioned and proud woman and I think the thought of being nursed by someone who's not blood relative is too much for her to bear

So right now it's one day at a time and see how things go

Finally got the patio and the drive cobbled and whilst we were at it we
made a new garden in the front opposite the kitchen window. Looking lovely already with the small amount of planting it's a small area, very sunny(if the sun ever shines) which we have gravelled and used up the cobbles left over and planted with grasses/bamboo and a bargain of an acer (in a pot so it can come in if the weather worsens). I've put some bird feeders in which have been found and it's really quite nice washing up now Lol

Have to go into town today to get new tyres on the car. OMG they are so expensive:eek: We did check around for prices and the place I'm going to did come in a lot cheaper but hubby thinks the price quoted was without VAT so maybe not such a bargain

Hugs to all those dealing with ill health ATM - your own or others, and try to take time for yourselves

GQ - I can't offer any advice on the shirt - sewing on a button is a serious test of my competence with a needle :o - but I can say there's definitely no sign of the yellow ball in Portsmouth. :( I decided not to bother opening the bathroom blind before leaving for work this morning - it was still dark, and will be dark again before I get home, so what would have been the point? (Sob.)

I might have a mooch up to Mr T later to get the bread flour, although if it's still sogging I might decide it's not that important after all. (Aesop - sorry for the delayed response - I'm sorry to hear you had problems with the Wright's bread mix. Maybe it was just a bad batch as I've never had any problems with it at all. (Well, except when I tried to make a batch by hand before I got my trusty BM: bread making by hand is not a strong skill of mine. :o))

Have a good day, all - I must go and do some work. (More sob. ;))

ETA (the job I'm doing this morning is utterly thrilling, as you can probably tell :o;)) - I opened a new bag of cat litter this morning to find a free pack of cat treats sitting in the top. It seemed a bit odd, but I don't suppose the mog's going to care where they came from. :)
Back after a very long break!

Morning! I for one DO NOT have the big yellow ball here. I have lots of murky grey clouds though if anyone would like to swap? It's good for the garden, it's good for the garden (keep repeating until you actually believe this ;)).
I'm really tired today, I always get like this after I've done a one off night shift but still. Bleurgh. Desperately need to fold some washing and put it away and get the house clean and tidy as MiL is coming round tonight. Tomorrow I start a run of 8 nights as I've stuck myself down for 3 extras. I worked it out last night that I am doing 7 extra nights or 84 hours of overtime this month. Phew, I'm going to be exhausted :(. Thankfully, DH is a star and will muck in willingly enough and get things done. He does the school run in the mornings when I've worked so I just come home and hit the sack. We've lots of fruit and veg in so no need for shopping either. I am doing a roast for tea so will stick the chook and the pots on one shelf and then fill the other 2 shelves with cake :) that should see the little guys through with their dinners for a while. Still have enough bread in MiL's freezer so no need to buy or make any for a while yet. Think we may survive until I come off my nights with only buying milk and petrol for both cars.
Saw my neighbour walking the kids to school this morning. Very envious. Can't wait until DS moves up to Juniors and then I can do the same. Even with driving it every day, the fuel saved will be significant so imagine what I can achieve if I walk 4 days out of 5? Actually, truth be told, there's no way in hell that I'll get up from a night shift and walk to fetch them so I will drive then. Perhaps I should aim for one day a week :o?

GQ, have you ever attempted shirring? You could do a pretty shirred cuff on your sleeves. The bonus with this is that you can just do a shirred spiral starting 1/4" into the cuff and use the edge of your foot as the width guide. The shirring elastic goes on the bottom and the thread on the top so you could use a nice contrasting thread. Not only will this pretty up the top somewhat but it will mean that you can have the sleeves full length to stop bugs crawling up there or shove them up out of the way. The elastic won't dig in because it's fine but it will hold because you can do a wider band of it IYSWIM?
DH has a shirt that I love but he won't wear because everyone said it makes him look g*y. I have this in my wardrobe now ready to repurpose and I'm going to cut off the collar and sleeves and shirr quite a bit of it. With the off-cuts I'm going to make some straps (don't do strapless) which will be great as they will be straps the length that I want them not hanging down off my shoulders all the time.

After I've got on and done my housework, I'm going to try and finish off my cardigan [STRIKE](or go to bed)[/STRIKE] then I can have a look around for some nice chunky buttons for it.

I don't have the yellow ball either...very dreary looking here today I can only just see the other side of the estuary.

I'm at the 'hairdressers' at the moment. Meaning I'm sitting here with two teaspoons of Mr Aldi's dark brown hair dye on my roots - I only touch the roots up these days, and this stuff is as cheap as chips and last much much longer in my hair, than the Nice and Easy was. It's a 50/50 mix so I can get away with a teaspoon of each. I'm very pleased with the result, especially for my pockets!

We had a nommy dinner last night courtesy of Mr T whoopsies, a packet of beef reduced to £2, plus assorted stir fry veg, pac choi, sugarsnap peas and mini sweetcorns, all about 25p a packet. I've got two packets of 7p okra for dinner tonight too, and leftovers from last night for lunch.

I've been comissioned to make a tray bake birthday cake for someone for tonight, and have to turn up with it at 7pm (hence sorting out the hair) for cake and fizz. I'm using a carrot cake recipe I've made in the round, loads of times, just hoping it will cook through OK in the tray...any tips? I'm using a foil roasting tray as my normal tin is on loan ATM. I'm getting paid for the cake...bonus.

  • Hi all:) No yellow ball here either. Very gloomy wet and dark. Have been catching up on all the posts, as haven't been on in a while. Have been enjoying reading a library book(got 3 out last week:). Dh is cooking dinner tonight and I made gammon yesterday in the slow cooker and it is always delicious. I am still using my breadmaker, and went to Lakeland last week and got myself a lovely baking bowl like we used at school? Really enjoying using it too. I am so easily pleased:) Washing drying on clothes horse(don't want to use the tumble drier). Must start something tonight on needles. Finished a sweater last week and a wee hat and mitts for a friends little one. Loved reading about the dolls house and book. Sounds lovely gifts for little girls:)

Very gloomy here all day, typical November, just not as cold.

I feel like we are treading water at the moment as we seem to be waiting on everyone else to get their derrier's in gear and come back to us about various tasks we need them to do for us. There are lots of great things about being here in sleepy Wales, but there is a distinct lack of urgency on the part of almost everyone we deal with which is hugely frustrating (we just chased the oil tank people to be told that the enginner had not been told we were without heating or hot water and was planning to come and see us on Friday -).

Our neighbour acroos the road rang earlier to ask if I like fresh herrings (answer - yes!), and to come across. She gave me 7 fat herrings and some picked crab. One of the good things about living in a little fishing community, you find bags of fish hanging on your back door! So in the freezer they went, with all the whoopsied fish from the other day. When I pick a crab I chop and freeze all the shells (same with prawns) to use making fish soup - costs pence, but tastes like the most luxurious treat!

Recycled left-over braised brisket (reused to make a pie) for dinner tonight, just the night for it!
