Suki - We are lucky enough to have a wood burner in our living room, and we are not to worried about the rest of the house, we never heat the bedroom and we are mostly in the one room during the evening. It is causing a bit of a problem trying to dry clothes and towels - we have an oil-filled electric radiator but trying not to use that as it is fairly juicy. Hot water could be a major problem, but we have the little cottage next door (currently having the kitchen done over so that I can cater from there), and luckily there is an immersion so we can have a bath! Crossing fingers we don't get a very cold snap though!

Cant beat the woodburner though for keeping everything toasty. I use the fire guard as a clothes rail - put to the side of the stove when its lit and I still drape towels over the rads when they are off but the burner is on - they dry eventually

Just off the phone from Hubby - and its bad news, his mum was admitted today and according to the nurse who came out to her - she should have gone in some time back :(

Lizzy - Im looking into freestat here myself. My digi box in the bedroom blew up at the weekend and I need a new one and if I can get the right channels I will switch over from sky - its getting beyond a joke how much thats costing

Rising, have you tried the VAC PAC bags? Great for duvets etc. I have a pile of them here in the hot press and in under the bed boxes full off linens

Re Freesat - I have this upstairs ("proper" sky downstairs) as there are no TV aerials around here (surrounded by hills & no reception:() and you get a pretty decent range of channels. I often find something to watch on BBC3, the ITV channels, 5 US channels & Film 4. Eurosport has also recently been added so there's a bit of sport available too.

Keep an eye on your local Freecycle site - we quite often get people giving away old Sky boxes on ours and all you'd need then is the Freesat card (£25). HTH:)

Re vac pac bags - I've looked at them in the past but have never been sure if they're worth the money so haven't tried them. It would be great to get more under the bed;) so will have a look when I'm out and about again.

If anyone can suggest cheap places to get then - please let me know:)

Good news (although some of you may think I'm nuts), I'm going back to work next week!:) Honestly, 8 weeks of being cooped up in the house has me at the end of my tether - can't wait to get back to RL in RL!:rotfl:

Mine isn't :( They didn't have any at Morrisons and i'm not making it, so shortcrust it'll have to be. I did get some bread, 2 lots of pilau rice and 2 shepherds pies for £2.47 though :D

Puff pastry may be my favourite, but there's nowt wrong with a good bit of shortcrust. Or with filo, suet, choux or any other kind of pastry, for that matter! ;)

suki - sorry, I'll stop now, I promise. :o I'm very sorry to hear about your MiL - my warmest thoughts to you and your family.

One thing I have decided is that I really need to have a good sort out of my freezer - I meant to have fishcakes for dinner tonight, from a pack that I know is in the freezer somewhere, but could I find it? It will have to wait until after my current essay is finished, though, as otherwise I'll use sorting out the freezer as an excuse to not do any writing. (And, given that I've managed less than a hundred words tonight, it's not as if I need any more excuses. :o)
Back after a very long break!

Hi there, I've had a nice fruitful day :) Managed to get the house clean and tidy and did roast chicken for tea with cauli, broccoli, sprouts, roast pots and carrot/swede/parsnip mash. Also cooked up 3 batches of beetroot, courgette and sultana cake. 24 cupcakes and 4 loaves in total :D
They are absolutely delicious and have got rid of the box of eggs which were leering at me from the side!
ETA: Just bought DD's birthday presents. £70  for a coat and a Guides t-shirt and jumper. Blow me down with a feather. Soooooooo expensive  :(

  • I can't find the original post, but the words Rumer Gooden and Dolls' House made me think of Miss Happiness and Miss Flower. Two Japanese dolls and a little girl named Nona.

The original book contained plans for building your own Japanese dolls' house. Unfortunately, the modern copies don't.

Shame, really, as DD wants a dolls house, but loves Japanese imagery, and at 12, I think it would go down better than a Barbie pink monstrosity. I can work from plans, but not from my head :)

Rising, Poundland sell the vacuum bags and Home Bargains had some for £1.99. They're well worth it, it's amazing how much smaller they make things!

Re pies, hubby came up with an idea he calls a side pie! Basically, it's a veggie pie that you have as an accompaniment to the meat pie!

Can you tell he likes pies? :rotfl:
  • Ahhhh fantastic thanks Gingervamp - I need to make a trip to HB (loo roll mountain has turned into a mole hill:D). Work is 1/2 way to my nearest one so will pop up once I'm back.

Well, it's very mild this morning (10 deg already) which is a nice change - hopefully the yellow ball will put in an appearance as washing pile is rather large.

Some more tidying on the cards for me today - DM visiting tomorrow and bringing the dresser:j so I need to sort the kitchen out and put all the bottles etc currently stored under the table somewhere (the garage probably!).

((suki)) so sorry to hear about your MiL.

rising I've had those vac bags from Poundland and so has Mum. We both found them carp; they leak and de-vac themselves. Perhaps we just got a bad batch because they were bought at the same time from the same store.

Splodger seedswopper (how I love that handle!) I really know what you mean about the joys of bonfiring, even on an otherwise dreary day. My lottie site's rules only allow bonfires in autumn and winter and custom and practice, handed down from generation-to-generation on the site itself, is that you only light fires if the wind is in a certain quarter.....away from the houses.

:D I've had a couple of burns last month to get rid of a terrible amount of non-compostable horrors such as couch grass roots, bindweed roots and horsetails and it's so satisfying to turn those wretched things into something useful like potash. :p Came home slightly kippered but very well-satisfied............And yes, a wee beverage is entirely in keeping.;)

Today I'm a free woman, or at least not expected into t'office as am on flex-leave. Hospital this morning and lottie this afternoon unless its tipping it down in which case I may play that well-known party game called Hunt the Bedroom Floor.

:o:D:p It's the case of, I know it's under there somewhere but I'm beggared if I can see it....................:p

Mrs Chip I'm having mental images of your new oil tank being helicoptered into position....

Well, I do believe the shade of grey out there is slightly less solidly-grey than on previous days, which may mean that it'll clear out later...here's hoping!

    :) Have a lovely day, y'all.

I don't think you are far off the mark GQ! The logistic of this whole affair are giving me the heebie-geebies. I'm a practical sort of gal and can usually come up with a solution to complex problems, but this one has got me beat!
