Recycled left-over braised brisket (reused to make a pie) for dinner tonight, just the night for it!

I have an announcement - Fanfare please

    THE MARKING IS FINISHED

    :T:j:beer::T:j:beer:

    Yayyyyyyy

My life comes back to me and as i emerge, blinking, into daylight - well, gloom i can see what an absolute tip it all is - piles of washing to put away, ironing to do, pies to make and tidying.

But i can do it now!!! Though there seems to be a funny smell in the kitchen, that i can't locate:o

    Good Afternoon everyone :)

Margaret54 I wish my DH was cooking dinner, as I haven't a clue what to make that everyone will eat. DS1 wants pizza for dinner tomorrow, so the only idea I had has gone out the window.
I'm attempting to knit an owl at the moment. Time will tell if it works out.
Mrs Chip I hope you lit a fire under the oil tank people and that you get heating back a lot sooner than friday. If there is any pie left could you pop it in the post for me please? I have a weakness for pastry covered almost anything and the braised brisket sounds yummy.
katieowl I hope the cake has turned out ok. I'm sure it has. I will have to look for Mr Aldi's hair dye the next time I go and give it a try.

No sun here today and I've gotten sick of looking out at cold, dark, dank weather. So I've closed the curtains and am trying to stop myself from thinking it is bedtime. I could quite happily go to bed right now. It might mean that I can actually feel my toes again instead of thinking someone has snuck ice cubes into my slippers.
I think I'm going to see if I can find Wonders of the Universe in iplayer and try to learn something new. If I'm going to feel bleugh and not want to do anything practical, then I at least need to exercise my brain.
  • No yellow ball here either - dark & damp and have had the light on since 1:30:eek:

Have spent the afternoon trying to create some storage space - very limited in the house (no cupboards).

Have sorted through all my curtains / material etc (stuffed away all over the place) and now have curtains in a big I*kea bag under the bed - I've loads... people keep offering them to me & I just can't say no:o.

Dogs spare duvet covers in a small unused laundry hamper in my room and all bits of material in another in the bathroom (only place I could find to put some kind of storage).

So.... I've now got 2 small drawers and a big laundry hamper empty (will be used to store pet food) - how quickly do you think I can fill the drawers!:D

    Phew! Been a busy bee!

Mrs Chip - you're making me feel very hungry with all the talk of fish soup and beef pie.

Oh, me too. Particularly if it's puff pastry.

I did get up to Mr T at lunchtime and am now stocked up with bread flour and with the cheese and onion bread mix - it's a shame I can't switch the BM on from work as I could just fancy a slice of warm c&o bread with butter. (Isn't it dinner time yet? :(;))

I really must make at least a start on my essay when I get home so I won't be on the forum until later (I'm trying to convince myself here :o) - oh, deep and fragrant joy, as a colleague so beautifully phrases it!
Back after a very long break!

Mine isn't :( They didn't have any at Morrisons and i'm not making it, so shortcrust it'll have to be. I did get some bread, 2 lots of pilau rice and 2 shepherds pies for £2.47 though :D

SGD - sadly this will just be the first investigatory visit to see where a new tank could go - lord alone knows how long it will take them to get to the point of installing the damn thing!

Hubby was on the phone to me last night saying he will prolly have to pack in work to go take his turn nursing his mum. Obviously that's going to put a huge strain on our finances as he is the only one working but then it's his mother and he wants to do his share. My offers of moving down and doing a couple of days a week are being resisted as I'm not "family". That's not a reflection on how I'm thought of usually just the MIL is a
very old fashioned and proud woman and I think the thought of being nursed by someone who's not blood relative is too much for her to bear

Suki - I'm sure your MIL would be horrified to think her son had to give up his job to care for her. Could you gently remind her that having married her son you are now family and that looking after her a couple of days a week might help her son keep his job?

No yellow ball today at all, but chicken casserole and dumplings for tea so there are compensations!

Have spent to save today - I've ordered a freesat box and when it comes I will be cancelling Sky. I knew this was likely to happen and have decided to do it whilst it is still a choice and not a necessity. My pup's free insurance cover runs out at the end of this week and cancelling Sky will more than pay for that. The freesat box was carefully researched before purchase. I'll miss the Spanish football and Discovery channels but I've been paying too much for the luxury of having them.

Went to Mr M today to review their offers as I have £150 of savings cards to use there. Goodness knows what I'm going to spend it on as I couldn't really see much I need to stock up on. I might wait until December and see if there are any good pre-christmas offers. That would give me time to eat down the freezer a bit too :D

Hasnt it bean a miserable day? Grey and drizzle all day - but at least its not been cold - although Ive had the stove on all day and am now treating myself to hot toddies ( one is never enough:D )

Awww lizzy, Im sure she would be but hubby loves his mother and knows a hospital or nursing home would see her off so hes more then happy to do it. Its funny, Ive not known my MIL long (we live 75 miles away now - before then 500miles and a flight) but I understand her so well. We get along great and when I had the GS last week and thought best not to call in she sent a message for me to visit as she had been looking forward to seeing me. Whilst us "in - laws" are liked or just tolerated, when it comes to caring for Mummy then the family close ranks and do it. Still we dont know what is around the corner so we will take it as it comes

Ladies - will you please stop mentioning pastry??? I had to go into town today and looked in all the whoopsies bins looking for something for long slow cooking to make a hearty strew and then pie with after thinking all day of suet crust pastry, but there was no beef or oxtails to be had - so its mince and dumplings tomorrow

Mrs Chip, I so know what you mean about the distinct lack of speed. When Im relying on workman/service providers I always ask " will that be NI time or normal time" :D being a londoner most my life the slow speed of life here although is really quite nice most the time, when waiting on a service its just so frustrating
BTW - what are you using for heating atm?

Lizzy - Im looking into freestat here myself. My digi box in the bedroom blew up at the weekend and I need a new one and if I can get the right channels I will switch over from sky - its getting beyond a joke how much thats costing

Rising, have you tried the VAC PAC bags? Great for duvets etc. I have a pile of them here in the hot press and in under the bed boxes full off linens

Right off to ring hubby and see how his day has been then find some supper - or stick to the toddies - not sure yet

Suki - We are lucky enough to have a wood burner in our living room, and we are not to worried about the rest of the house, we never heat the bedroom and we are mostly in the one room during the evening. It is causing a bit of a problem trying to dry clothes and towels - we have an oil-filled electric radiator but trying not to use that as it is fairly juicy. Hot water could be a major problem, but we have the little cottage next door (currently having the kitchen done over so that I can cater from there), and luckily there is an immersion so we can have a bath! Crossing fingers we don't get a very cold snap though!

  • although it has been a dreary old missy day today - it was just perfect for having a burn up on the allotment - i got loads burnt up - i covered the fire over with wet stuff / soil as i was leaving so i should get a fair bit of charcoal too :j

came home and felt smokey but satisfied - and thought a glass of full bodied red was in order - most of my bottled homebrew wines are white or light reds - so decided to rack off my hedgerow wine (and taste test it - quality control is essential :rotfl:)

anyway - it tastes bloomin fabby - so readily filled up my glass

picked up some whoopsie ribeye yesterday - it's been an age since i had any beef in the house - so i am treating myself to steak tonight, think i'll make rossti potatoes to go with it and serve with some homegrown veggies

although it was a grey old day - i rather enjoyed it and am off now to start cooking :D
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
    made loads last year
