How strict are Ryanair with cabin luggage pls?

Most people I fly with are well aware of it.

It's fairly clear that shop purchases need to go in the cabin bag, they don't count it as a separate piece of luggage, it's part of your one bag allowance. I guess you're free to call it a second piece of luggage though.


Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage.

Seems pretty clear to me too.
Anything bought from a shop in the airport has to go into your one piece of luggage - even Froggitt's peanut butter and banana bagel.

I was wondering about this when we flew with ryanair last week (with no problems at all). Our boarding pass said the above, but there were lots of signs up at Manchester and our return airport (that mainly does budget airlines) saying that you take one bag of shop purchases onboard in addition to hand luggage on ryanair flights. Personally I wouldn't want to risk it because I think my boarding pass is the 'official' line from Ryanair, and we only bought a couple of bottles of water that easily fitted in our bags- but I'm guessing customers would pretty annoyed in it was enforced.

Also very few people got measured/ weighed on either of our flights. A few got asked politely to put their handbags within their bags. One lady did this and then made the mistake of complaining about the staff very loudly (and not in very polite terms) once past the gate- they called her back and asked to measure and weigh and looked gutted that she was within limits.

Haha, you knew what I meant! Although don't get me started- as someone who weighs about half of what of a lot of other travellers weigh I have often argued that I should get extra luggage allowance for this...
