I meant, what sort of proof the OP could reasonably be expected to provide. As I said, I did genuinely spend some time travelling and would not be able to prove this myself.Sambucus_Nigra wrote: »You would have to purchase fuel, and usually this is paid with a debit or credit card. And most people will bring back at least one item that has been bought abroad or will have a receipt shoved in a bag somewhere from a book or fridge magnet bought somewhere. Or a photo with a date embedded in it.
I don't have any receipts, photos or tourist tat. And as for a photo being proof - it just doesn't strike me as a professional thing to ask for. After all, you'd never prove you worked in a particular role by producing a photo of your former co-workers!
I'm afraid I doesn't understand why it's a big deal - you should never lie about your qualifications or past jobs, because they they are part of the reason why an employer is hiring you. Travelling? How does make anyone a better or a worse employee?0 -
It is not about what they did with their time. It is about proving they were not in the jail, drug rehab, whatever. Or a job they got sacked from that is being left off to cleanse the CV.
And since the lie it has become about demonstrating personal integrity.Debt free 4th April 2007.

The OP is being asked to provide some evidence that they were indeed travelling for a while, and because he is lying he has nothing to show at all. I expect any evidence would do but as he wasn't - he hasn't got any. Because it is a lie!If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
I went travelling years ago with my sister. She'd have had tons of evidence as she keeps tickets and things as mementoes. Me.. nothing. I throw everything out and keep nothing. Don't take photos much either. So I'm another who would have no evidence.0

But - and the point is this - the OP wants a job - so if you wanted a job, would you ask your sister for some of that evidence to prove that you went travelling? And the situation is that the OP supposedly went travelling recently - not years ago. It's not being asked for fun, it's to secure a job.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
I think perhaps they already know you worked somewhere, maybe an employer of theirs has a partner, relative etc that recognises your name and knows you worked at XXX for that period.
I think you should say sorry but I can't find anything that proves I was travelling, I worked very briefly at XXX and then took off for a while - and then you've said it and they can either confirm what they already thought or make a decision based on your current status. If someone who works there/knows them, also knows you were working at XXX I think you're digging yourself in deep by trying to get pretend evidence of travelling. I'd drop the travel cover, admit to the job but say it was brief, and then wait to see what they say.
I once wrote "CSE's and O Levels" then listed what I got, but later realised I hadn't specified what I got in each. It wasn't until they said I'd have to provide my certificates showing my XXX O level, which I didn't have, I had a CSE, that I realised it could be seen as lieing. I was 10 years out of school and didn't think it would matter what I'd got any more. Fortunately, I didn't get the job so I didn't have to say anything, but we live and learn don't we."There is no substitute for time."

I don't keep old bank statements. My travelling wasn't recent. And I can't write to the banks requesting they reissue the relevant statements because I no longer have an account with either of them!Sambucus_Nigra wrote: »But - and the point is this - the OP wants a job - so if you wanted a job, would you ask your sister for some of that evidence to prove that you went travelling? Proof that t0rt0ise's sister went travelling, only, I would imagine. Some people like to collect ticket stubs etc and scrapbook them - but generally just their own bits and pieces, not those belonging to their travelling buddies.
Even if the travel was recent (and genuine!), I still wouldn't expect the OP to have proof, unless the OP actually worked abroad (which is not part of the lie) or rented (but the OP allegedly lived in a campervan).
I suppose the OP (if the OP had been genuine) could have obtained a personal reference from a friend of good standing (e.g. a doctor, teacher, etc), but a) I don't know if this would be acceptable to the potential employer and b) that would be taking the lie too far. It's one thing to lie on your CV, it's another to expect someone to risk their name to back up your lie!0 -

This isn't about you - this is about the OP. the OP alleges that he want travelling recently so bank statements will be easily accessible. The OP alleges he went in a campervan - which would need fuel [usually paid for by a debit or credit card].
I'm not on about anyone lying - it's about the sister having documentation that shows 2 people travelled to Europe or photos of them both there.
I'm not sure what point you are making, other than you went travelling years ago. Well done. This is about a recent event, that didn't even happen. and as such, the employer being reasonable to expect some sort of proof that it happened. I have proof I went to France 3 summers ago as I still have the paperwork for taking the hire car over, plus my emails to show that we booked a train from Folkestone. In this day and age, unless you are a hobbit - proving things is really really easy.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
