OP - confess NOW. Get it over and done with. They may still offer the job.

Better to do that than lie, get the job by deception then have a sacking on your record - and not be able to claim JSA as a result.

Do the right thing and they may just let you in.

I started a new job last xmas but left in May this year because it wasn't for me didn't get on with my manager etc I left and went onto JSA.

Now I have a job offer but I didn't disclose this job on my C.V. I said I was
'travelling' during the duration where I was at my previous job.

They are now requiring a 5 year references and evidence I went travelling to cover that gap :(

I didn't mention it because I have had a 'job-hopping' past which has been used against me in previous interviews.

I've already said I've lost my passport but they are saying maybe I should have stamps or some evidence of my travels :(

I really want the job and they seem really nice employers but I've fed them loads of rubbish about travelling and this lie is escalating out of control, they must smell b/s :(

    What should I do?

OP if you fess up, not to put lies on lies, but can you say the reason the job wasn't for you was something quite innocuous that doesn't reflect badly, eg travelling time (if it was not on your doorstep) or emphasise some aspect of the job that is completely different to your career path/the job you've got so it won't sound bad if you say it 'wasn't for you'. I'm still not sure whether I would fess up or not in your shoes there's an argument for and against, but if you do, what exactly are you gonna say?

If you were claiming JSA wont payroll know when your p46 comes back with the job centers details on?
  • Good luck OP if you do decide to confess.

They might chuck you out, but if they can see you lied about something rather harmless because you wanted the job so much, they might be lenient.

Let us know how you get on.

The only problem is, it may raise doubts about how genuine the OP was with regards to everything else he/she has said. The fact that he/she only confessed after being asked to provide evidence would not be the same as just coming clean because you felt guilty.

For a company that is rigorous enough to demand a full five background check, IMO, they would be unlikely to want to keep the OP on once they discover he/she had provided false information in order to secure the job.

To be fair, everybody 'tweaks' their cv.. some more than others! :rotfl:
You even get companies who get paid for beefing up your cv for you.

But as to how to get round this one.. not sure. Just tell them if necessary that no, you can't prove it as your passport's gone missing. You don't happen to have any friends who were travelling at around that time and who might have some 'evidence' you could borrow;)?

I have to join the anti-CV tweaking brigade. IMO, it's an awful practice that that's bad for everyone involved and completely undermines the selection process.

A better candidate could miss out.
The employer doesn't employ on merit.
The tweaker could end up in job where they are out of their depth and don't live up the expectations of their colleagues and employer, plus the stress of living a lie and the paranoia of being found out.

If there's something on your CV that you're not proud of, work on yourself to improve it. After all the CV is just a document to sell yourself and is completely worthless if it doesn't reflect the person that you are.
  • I don't really understand why you left the last job off your CV? Unless it was because you didn't part on good terms?

Job hopping isn't automatically a negative and frankly one more job wouldn't have made the difference between looking like a job hopper or worker who was loyal to just one company. There are a plethora of good / innocent reasons why someone may change jobs frequently.

I'm wondering whether you stated you went travelling verbally or did you actually write it on your CV? And did you elaborate on this at length or was it just a passing reference to "I went travelling around Europe in a camper van".

If you didn't elaborate clearly on the length of time that you were travelling, IMO it could be possible for you to downplay the whole thing as if it was just for a couple of weeks or weekends interspersed over that period. i.e. a misunderstanding.

Perhaps your last job was mistakenly left off your CV because you accidentally sent off the version of your CV that was not updated with your last job, and you've only just put two and two together to realise what has happened and wanted to explain yourself. That may help your confession to look more like an innocent mistake and it would be helped by the fact that you could provide proof of actually being employed at that time (which will come out anyway from the information on your P45); with employment generally being considered a positive thing that you don't need to cover up.

Obviously, you won't be able to downplay your travelling story, if you've already overplayed it and / or have put it on your CV; in which case IMO it may be better to withdraw your application for "personal reasons".

Everyone I know lies on their C.V some worse than others.I do not know one person who hasnt lied and most people I know work in professional jobs.
I would just say that Im sorry I have no !!!!!! because I didnt know I would need it for jobs. Say that you were not in prison and that you would be prepared to have a CRB done if needed.

There are no lies on my cv. And I have a great cv.
Apart from the personal stuff (which not everybody does) you wouldn't have any of these things if you'd been driving round Europe in a campervan,

Im sure youd have at least one photo, and some kind of document/booking for how you go to France in the 1st place i.e ferry, eurostar, then something detailing the transaction of the campervan. Then credit/debit card/bank statements for all your purchases there.

My son applied for a job in the finance sector. There was a 2 week gap in his 5 years employment record on his CV which he didn't think to include as it was only 2 weeks. He got the job but 3 weeks after starting his training he was called in by HR to explain the 2 weeks !
    blimey, lol
What wrong with gaps on CV's though?
    I don't really get it.
What if you haven't needed to work for a number of months for whatever reason (maybe you won some money) and you just want to relax and enjoy life for a 6 months or so.
Would that look really bad on a CV?
Do you need to prove that you just hung out with friends and watched a lots of TV!?
Aren't people allowed to just enjoy life whilst they can anymore, lol?
  • I think actually it's just that - the economy has been so hard hit that gone are the days where nearly everyone you know was either taking a gap year or extended leave of absence or simply taking a break between jobs. Gaps need to be explained and employers like to know you haven't just been sitting about. It's just a sign of the times, I'm afraid.

'Scuse me but I have never 'tweaked' mine. And this is a whole lot more than tweaking anyway.
I have done a fair amount of travelling and was never asked to prove it. Seems they smell a rat. OP they WILL find out. How? Because your tax and NI insurance records will be passed on. 'Fess up now and you might just win through. Dig yourself in deeper and you could end up fired after starting. That won't look too good for future employment.
