  • Would you rather be rumbled once the first person starts asking you about the intricacies of camper van life?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

What are you going to put on your CV when you get the sack a few months down the line? That will be another short term job!

I said I went around europe in a campervan :( They haven't mentioned a CRB sounds like they are not going to do one I WANT THEM TO DO ONE just so they let this travelling thing go.
Who came up with the "travelling thing"?
The feedback from the interview that was I seem a really genuine guy - fooled them twice eh? and they'll be happy to have me on board etc I feel absolutely terrible!

Even if i was to fess up it'll be hard to look them in the eye knowing I've fed them some bullshine - dont think you'd be aroung long enough to worry about this. :(

Sorry to be harsh but you lied and have been found out, chalk one down to experience I think.

I think I'm going to fess up Tomorrow when they call me again about the references. Apparently it's due to the nature of the job they need to cover my 5 years history. Are they just trying to save money on a CRB? Ridiculous the amount of red-tape rubbish you need to go through to get a job these days.

How would a person who has been unemployed for a while but not claiming JSA provide a traceable history for themselves?

    Ridiculous.

It is very far from ridiculous. Some companies do need 5 yrs documented employee's history. Ours does. Google "known consignor".
It is requirement for company who needs for example "Known consignor" status, and if company doesn't have this it means their shipping abroad becomes much more expensive and administratively burden some.

Just having CRB check won't help to bypass that. That only says you have no record, not what you were doing for the past 5 years!

So we would rather not employ you then to loose this status.

I can't go into the job specifics as I'll be rumbled if they are reading this.

I'm now thinking of continuing the lie and trying to squirm my way through it. I want to confess but even if they did forgive my porkie I couldn't start a job on that note with everyone thinking "look, there's that lying git" it would be so bad :( And like other people have said they'd start to question everything else about me :(

If they really need it for the nature of what the company does, if you won't supply the necessary proof you will be out before the probationary period is out.
No question about that. The chances are they might REALLY need it.
Some companies genuinely must have all the paperwork right!
  • Even if they don't NEED it - they might just be smelling a rat and want it.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I spent the summer travelling around France, and other than some photos (of which I am in about three) I have no real proof that I was anywhere. So if I was asked, I wouldn't really know what to provide.

However, as everyone has said, it looked like they've rumbled you, or are clocking to something not quite fitting right. It's up to you whether you attempt to come clean or if you try to keep the lie going.
  • I used to work for a company that did this kind of screening and it was my job to do all of the chasing for this. If it's company policy and it's a security type role or is somewhere which could be a target for terrorism then it's probably not that they're onto you they just want to check they're not employing someone who could be a threat. If someone had been traveling I would expect to see either stamps in their passport/visas or for the details of someone I could contact who would be able to confirm that they had been traveling (ideally a professional person such as a doctor) or documents from those dates showing evidence of having been traveling. To be honest most people could provide those things but the main thing we were checking is that they haven't spent long periods of time in 'dodgy' countries where there are high levels of terrorism and that they hadn't been in prison abroad.

For those who asked whether they had asked for a CRB, we used to have applicants checked but the CRB is only valid for crimes committed within the UK so if the person had spent a lot of time outside of the UK it then meant that if they had committed any crimes during those periods we wouldn't know about them unless we apply for security checks from those countries.

If someone had told me they'd been traveling until May this year and had now lost their passport, it would look a bit dodgy to me unless you've moved house or something. I would expect someone that enjoys traveling to have taken good care of their passport or at least applied for a new one.

Bank statements usually show transactions in Euro, photos of places [they have date info and lots have GPS embedded now], photos of you at places, text messages from friends saying 'Hi, how's Paris'....that sort of thing.
