Tell them you had a really awful job and didn't want to put it on your CV so invented the travelling just to cover the gap. Tell them you really, really wanted a job with them and thought the little white lie wouldn't be an issue, but now you regret not being honest with them and want to come clean. Look remorseful (but not downtrodden) and keep your fingers crossed.
JMHO, of course.
I agree with this, and also provide the appropriate evidence as you tell that that you are completely telling the truth this time.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
I think I'm going to fess up Tomorrow when they call me again about the references. Apparently it's due to the nature of the job they need to cover my 5 years history. Are they just trying to save money on a CRB? Ridiculous the amount of red-tape rubbish you need to go through to get a job these days.
How would a person who has been unemployed for a while but not claiming JSA provide a traceable history for themselves?
Ridiculous.0 -

Ridiculous.
If someone has no traceable history they will ask for references from reliable parties - the same kind of people that can sign your passport application.
It is far from ridiculous - it is to ensure that they do not employ dishonest people!0 -

They might be relieved to hear you were just hiding one rubbish job.
This is what I'm hoping actually. Their persistence with this travelling thing is suggesting to me they may think I was doing time or something? It's really stressing me out I thought they would just let it go and take my word for it but this isn't going to happen0 -

Have you got someone who would be prepared to give you a character reference covering the last job and job seeking period who could state that it is out of character (assuming it is) etc etc.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. I think confessing is probably the best way to go. An employer (if they feel inclined to do so) can check with any previous employers on your CV that you worked there (they don't have to be your specified referee for them to do this), and if any inconsistencies are found, you can be sacked for lying on your CV. OK, so it's a little different in your case, but what if they were to check with the employer previous to the one you missed off - will they support your 'left to go travelling' story?
And, hell no, I'd never tweak my CV. It's stunning. Obviously0 -
I think you are too late for honesty. I would look for a character witness to write a character reference for you and include within it that they vouch during the last year you have taken an extended holiday.
You should also 'find' your passport And demonstrate that itndoes not have any visa's in it for the time you were away demonstrating you did not go anywhere outside of EU or dodgy.
If you have not said exactly where you travelled you may be OK remember places such as Turkey are outside of the EU and do stamp your passport.
The worst bit about this is if you do start work then on induction you will be introduced as "LL30 who has joined us after travelling in a camper van around Europe" . It is probably the most interesting thing they will remember about you.
As a former camper van owner I hope you have also had one as they are conversation pieces and enthusiastic new colleagues will want to know it's condition, year, splittie, lowered, rat, where you bought it....0 -
Travelling doesn't necessarily mean one big block overseas, you can also have travelled around the country catching up on old friends/ailing relatives?
Alas there is no good way out of this, you told porkies, so even coming clean will make them question if you have been straight with all the other claims.0 -
I'd stick with the lie, personally.
In fact, i've used the same lie on lots of my jobs as I have huge gaps all over the place where i've been unemployed and not claiming JSA. Luckily, unlike in your case, they just took my word for it.
Say your passport wasn't stamped and you dont know how you can prove it, but they are welcome to do what they need to do to confirm you haven't been locked up or anything/.0 -

But for someone that really had been travelling, it would be very simple to prove it, hence why that line probably won't wash.0
