Another thread about 'being off sick', another example where it is a woman who is depressed.

Genuine question - why is every 'depressed and off sick for stress' thread on this forum posted by a woman? Do men never take time off for depression and, if not, why not?

I'm genuinely intrigued. It raises all sorts of questions .. .

I think women tend to be more open about their feelings and less embarrassed about being ill.

They tend to visit the doctor more often than men. They also, on average, live 4 to 5 years longer.

    Perhaps there is a connection?
  • Morning everyone,

Thankyou for your good luck messages re today's meeting.

I have thought about putting it off, but decided to stick with it as it will only get put off and I'll stress more of it again next time. Not sure how I feel today, had a restless nights sleep last night but thats' nothing new.

Thankyou also for wishing my dd well, got to go to UCLH in London tomorrow with her, just hope she is up to it, as she is off school again today x

All you advice and replies have been fab, thankyou xx

    Hi Torry Quine.

After fighting for flexiable working rules and reducing my hours down, I now only work 16 hours per week, this is pro rata, I earned. 76.61 a week.

    That's below NMW.
  • Just called work, to check if I needed anyone with me, got told no as it's an informal chat.........................will update later xx
  • Oldnotwiser, my wages are pro rata as I have term time hours, this then makes even 12 months pay even in August when I dont work x

Hi, just wanted to say good luck later and for tomorrow.

My daughter is also 14 and has been ill with me/cfs for the last 3 years. Yesterday was her first full day at school in forever. She was so bad in february it felt like she was just getting worse and of course there is not much they can do. She is so much better now thankfully. Routine and waking the same time every day even if she couldn't get up really helped us (then gradually making it earlier over weeks). It retaught her body what it should be doing and finally all the dips in energy seemed to just disappear after a few weeks. She might have just improved anyway but for us it was like magic. She still has dodgy knee pain and aches and pains but she has the energy to deal with it now. Her occupational therapist had her doing gentle Wii exercise of 5 mins a day at her peak of energy about 1-2pm and she gradually built it up. Her internet tutor as she was doing Maths and English as she was to poorly for school was brilliant and into yoga and taught her breathing exercises to help her relax when she came round for a review. You have probably heard all this and its annoying when people give advice you already heard but i thought it might help you have a bit of hope.

As a mum i felt pretty crap and i did get so frustrated at her i knew she could not help it but i just wanted her to get out of bed. We had a new consultant at the hospital this year and he got things moving for us with the Me/cfs team who came out to us (only see 14yrs and above). I am sorry they are not as helpful in your area.

I had Post Viral ME some years ago and if ill can still relapse for a few weeks. I have found that if I have a "slump" then things like low impact exercise - yoga, pilates (beginner) and tai-chi - does seem to help... it keeps the body moving and prevents muscle wastage from inactivity which then makes it all even worse...
As for work - if you work in a highly stressful environment to be honest I think it's a good time to look at alternatives... I work in a very high stress job and am getting out as fast as I can... It's affecting me, my family and my health - no money is worth this!

Look into things like cleaning for people as self employed - I used ot have a cleaner who did 4 hours for me, I was very flexible about her hours and what day so it fitted round her college hours. Another friend set up her own ironing business... it has taken off in the last 2 year that she has moved into bigger premises and expanded again recently and now has several staff working for her.
    Look outside of the box!

There are threads on here by men about being off sick and depressed. Men DO take time off for depression. At least do some research!

    Really?

Point me to a thread about men being off for stress and depression, please.

If they exist - and perhaps they do - i suspect for every one that exists, 10-20 feature women who 'can't cope'.
