Hi Guys, I am self employed so no such thing as overtime, but my DH does have a second job which is on a casual basis, generally to cover holidays and illness etc, as well as odd hours overtime in his regular job.
We played with the snowball calculator etc and worked out that:
If DH does 2 hours overtime in his regular job every month (more than achievable), this brings our debt free date forward by 1 month.
If DH does one shift a month every month with his casual job (again very achievable given holiday and sick cover) then this brings our debt free date forward by 6 months.
Since realising the actual difference that this makes, we have decided to pay off this extra money directly to the debt as overpayments.
It also makes him more determined to get these extra shifts, by actually ringing up his second job more often to remind them that he is happy to step in at the last minute, rather than waiting for them to call him. As a result, he already has a whole load of shifts in the diary!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. thought i would add to this. i'm currently averaging approx 70 hrs extra ot/month at a mixture of 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 rates. occasionally double time is added in there as well. i'm not in the highest paid job but my aim is to walk away with at least £1500/month so i can pay off £1000 to debt only and live of the rest paying digs, phone, petrol etc. i've managed to get into a good routine of staying on for 3 or 4 hrs each day midweek and doing an extra 4-6 hours on a sat morning and keeping the rest of the weekend free to avoid burnout.
i am in a lucky position that ot is always available for me and i have also set up a spreadsheet which can calculate my final pay after tax inc ot which at the most has been within £2 out. this has helped spur me on as i work out how much i can earn for the days i work and see exactly how much i'll end up with. i now feel guilty if i decide not to do ot and end up adding extra hours on another day to make up the shortfall as i know exactly how much i'll be losing if i don't work it.
it is hard going but i know it will be worth it to get rid of my debt quicker, so a message of support to everyone who has went down this route is to keep up the good work as i'm sure we will soon be getting posts from people who have made it and ended up debt free through sheer determination 0 0

I ended up only doing 13 hours of overtime in January. I'm trying to decide what goal to set for February, knowing that I have a lot of studying to do this month, but still wanting to pay off those debts. I think I'll lower my goal to ten, and see how I do.Hi, I'm Mich

well after today and tomorrow i will have completed 76 extra hrs in overtime for the month (my overtime month runs from the 13th to the 12th of the next month). this should give me an extra £562.55 approx after tax on 27th febs pay. what i will most likely do is live off the £500 and put the rest towards debt which should be roughly £1030. if i can keep this level of pay up for the rest of the year then i should easily pay of my £10000 target for 2007
how is evrybody else getting on?0

I don't get overtime with my full-time job (we get TOIL instead, only I never seem to have time to actually take it!) However, I do get generally a few hours a month doing stuff additional to my normal job role (though unfortunately none last month or this!) and I applied & got a small role within a project that's a few hours a month. At the end of this month I'll get paid £44.29 before tax extra, which is pants as I normally can get another £100 quid in after tax each month!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

            Hi everybody,
I just thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. I'm well practiced at doing up to 50 hours overtime per month. Things are a bit quiet in the office at the mo, and I've been off work for the last four months (at university), so the total's zero for this year so far. Never mind, when the jobs start rolling in, I'll be able to get going.
 Regards,
