That's terrible! Doesn't sound like the father is capable of looking after the children on his own at the moment if he is going to do things like that.

Would a MDI insulin regime be possible so he doesn't have to rely on snacks? I don't know if a child could calculate the right dose to inject at mealtimes though, it's hard enough to work out as an adult!
Sorry I don't know much about diabetes in children, I was diagnosed with type 1 as a adult (LADA), some things must be different in children, as they are so much smaller you must need to be so much more precise with the doses.

Generally most children will move on to a MDI regime but start on test, inject, eat, snack. This is mostly to get blood glucose levels back to normal and to get them used to injecting and testing.

My DD started on MDI about a month or six weeks after diagnosis and now wants a pump :)

He had everything he needed in his bag.. and he can just have fruit or toast or a couple of biscuits as a snack it isnt like he needs a 3 course dinner every 2 hours! Though at the moment he would probably eat it! lol

He took the book with ALL the relevant contact numbers so if his dad didnt want to ring me he could have rung any of those and asked advice or reassurance. We both were given the info at the same time so he has as much info as I do.. he has no excuse.

I was really worried about him going due to him not making sure DD4 had her injections last weekend when he had them and now I know I was right to be concerned.. Id ring him myself but it is impossible to have a sensible discussion with him it devolves into an argument because he couldnt possibly ever be wrong!

I just cant believe he would be so stupid given he know how serious it gets and how quickly things can get scary.. :(

DS is ok though and I am thankful for that.. he is taking responsibility to the best of his ability.. he prepares and does his injections and his bloods he just needs reminding when it is time.. which after 10 days isnt bad going.

I now have a blinding headache.. I do dislike being angry..

And  jam sandwiches for breakfast and cheesecake after dinner AND sweets.... !!!!!!!!!!!!!! explains the 29.5 reading... Do we not have more than enough to deal with, without having to wipe the noses of grown men as well?

While I am thinking on the subject.. are the band things a good idea that say you have diabetes/epilepsy or whatever? in case something happens while I am not there? We are sorting him a pass for school to say he can eat in class if he feels unwell and he is not to be sent to the med room but the nurse called to come to him.

I'd be livid too, and yes, I do think it is completely the father's responsibility (as opposed to the children) when you are not around. It's neglect as far as I am concerned.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

That sounds sensible re: getting used to injections before moving on to MDI or whatever.

A medicalert bracelet or similar might be a good idea, I've seen them recommended. I don't have one because I'm hypo aware so I'd know long before I fell unconscious/ semi conscious.

I'd be angry too, at the end of the day he is the father, and it is his responsibility to look after his son and his son's medical needs

    You should still have one.

If you were involved in a car accident for example you could be unconcious and requiring medical treatment. The medical staff would need to know ASAP that you are type 1 diabetic as it might alter the treatment they give you, especially if you were unconcious for an extended period of time and family/friends had not been located. In this situation a medicalert bracelet could be a lifesaver.

There are some really quite nice ones out there now, some are very pretty!

By failing to ensure that your child has the prescribed medical treatment and care, he put the child at risk of 'significant harm' through neglect.

Does he fully understand what is expected of him as a parent or has he recklessly disregarded the care instructions? It's the sort of question that a Child protection team and a court would ask of him.

I can see why you're so angry and I'm pleased that your son's OK.

It was this bit of your first post that caught my eye:

    [QUOTE=pigpen;47557869
He has not been allowed to get any snacks and has missed 4 of his blood checks.. in the broad scheme of things he is still ok, blood sugars are really high, but !!!!!!.. what is KH thinking (or not?!?!) His brother and sister both have diabetes he KNOWS how important this all is and has repeatedly argued with his brother about him not taking it seriously or keeping to the health plan.. then he neglects his own son!
    [/QUOTE]

    "not been allowed"?
This sounds like it wasn't an omission i.e. it was forgotten but something much more serious and deliberate by not allowing your lad to have the snacks he medically needs.

Are you absolutely sure that that is what happened?
