Ooooh I'm loving all the baby talk. I'm going to see my friend tomorrow who had her baby about 3 weeks ago. His name (which is River btw) shocked me a little at first but I'm getting used to it. It's better than the name she originally picked for him, which her partner had to veto in a big way because she was so adamant she was going to call her son after a character from the film '300'!
I can't remember if I posted or not to say that I didn't get that job up north. Turns out they already had a recent graduate in mind but I loved being told on the phone that had they not had that person apply then I would have definitely got it. Thanks, I really wanted to know that! Oh well back to the searching.
Also I need a bit of MS advice; I am tempted to get a credit card. I have never had one in my life and have always been adamant that I would never get one. But this month is throwing up a lot of things money wise that I can't afford unless I dip into my savings (which I don't really want to do). Things like; car insurance (which I get through admiral multi-car so it's a lot cheaper but you have to pay the year up front), pass plus (which I need to do before my holiday where I will be driving on motorways and country lanes to get there), rac/aa cover (which I have discount vouchers for but still it's an expense) and my car needs servicing and the front suspension bushes need replacing (which shouldn't be too expensive but again, it's still something out the ordinary!). Should I just bite the bullet and use my savings to pay these things off or should I get a 0% credit card and spread the cost a bit more? I think I would be able to just use it for emergencies and big spends and would be able to pay it off before the 0% ends, but there is always that thought that I could be tempted to spend more on it than I need to.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20170 -
I wouldn't bother with Pass Plus, Ruby. My driving instructor told me it's a waste of money, and to just find a confident driver (parent, friend ect) and go out driving with them on unfamiliar roads, at night yaddayadda. To be completely honest, you'll learn a lot and gain enough road confidence driving yourself.
Do you get good interest on your savings? If you do, I'd get the credit card. But pay for what I had to on it, save the card details for payments then cut the little b*gger up so you can't spend on it again. If not, I'd just use the savings then build it back up again. Plus, if you hit another snag and do have an emergency/cash flow problem one month you don't have to be thinking 'I need to pay £xx off my credit card' you can just think 'well, I'll just save what I can at the end of the month' if that makes sense!!
So much cuteness over the MSE babies talking! I must remember to never mention 'dada' and only how awesome I am to our kid so my name's said first. mwahahah.
Hope everyone's having a nice weekend. Feels really spring-y here today. Given the house a really good scrub this morning, even managed to fling a couple windows open in the process and get some washing hung out. Feels nice to not be bundled up anymore! Planning to get some baking, surveys and stp-ing done this afternoon too. Trying to be productive!0 -
Thanks Cinny, since I posted been mulling it over and just thought that I might as well just use some of the savings. Plus I am expecting a tax rebate soon so that should replace a chunk of it. As for the pass plus, my dad is insisting I do it (and I should insist he pays for it then hehe). He's a bit funny about me driving to be honest (even though he admits I'm pretty good) and doesn't really want to take me out. However that being said, a couple of weeks ago I had to go across the river to pick something up and I thought "I should probably go home first and get him to come with me otherwise he'll moan that I went on the M25 without him". But then he moaned that I wanted to drag him out and why didn't I just go without him! Can't win with the guy! Plus Admiral have said they'll knock my car insurance down a bit more if I do it as well.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20170

I'd just use the savings, even with the best intentions once you start on a credit card it can be hard sometimes not to be tempted to start to rely on them.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008
Debt September 20th 2022 £2991.68- 96.92% paid off0 -
Only comment I would make ruby is that if you get one be sure the 0% is on spends and not just balance transfers. This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.:j:j:j:j0

Also, whatever you put on it, make sure you clear it every month as this will help your credit profile increase.0

Wish we could do this. I'm having a moment here. Supposed to be speaking to the MD of a company about a job role but shes on o2 so naturally her mobile doesnt work for !!!!. Trying to work out an alternative method of communication but getting annoyed I can't even speak to her as this would be an AWESOME opportunity for me. Does she not have a landline you can call? MSN? Skype? Facebook chat at the worst? Smoke Signals? Carrier Pigeon? Throw bottles containing messages at her house, using the empties from the man cave to be green?0 -
