I honestly think the best way to feed a cat cheaply is to bulk buy excellent quality food.
I buy a 7.5kg bag of applaws. It's grain free and 80% meat. A 5kg cat needs just 60g of it per day. I have two cats, one 5kg and one 3kg, so I use 100g per day. One bag lasts me 75 days. And cost me £30.
Then I buy hilife pouches from b&m. 60% meat. Costs me £2.28 for 12 pouches. Or I buy 48 natures menu pouches for £18 from pets at home.
Costs me under £20 per month to feed my cats a high meat content, grain free diet.
That said, I know some people don't really care about their pets having a decent diet. Just go for the cheapest. Which, while I don't agree with that, it's absolutely their prerogative.
To each their own, the above is just my opinion.Sigless0 -

Sorry not had time to read entire thread but have a couple of suggestions (sorry if already advised). Tins work out much better value than pouches for the wet food and if you have waste on the tuna could you not buy cheap tins of sardines in oil as these tend to be much cheaper than even value tuna. Hope this helps. x0

There's also the issue of getting them to eat it!
I have tried literally every "decent" wet food on the market ... I've spent a fortune on stuff they won't eat - very frustrating as most things you can only buy in multi-packs - and it ends up going in the shelter's food box (don't really mind that but I just can't afford to buy stuff and have them not eat it).
I know people will say leave it down and they will eventually eat it, but after several days of them not touching it and contstant yeowling I will admit to giving in and reverting to something they will eat.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

What foods have you tried? What types of food does your cat like? pate? chunks? gravy? jelly?
I have the fussiest cat known to man. Was advised to try this trick. Don't feed any wet for a week or two, dry only. Then after a week pick a wet that you think your cat will like, and put it down. The cat will be grateful for any wet food at this point. This worked for me after months and months of trying. I tried the 'leave it down' approach, like you, it got me nowhere.
I wasted more money on wet food than I care to mention, all for it to be given away. The above worked a treat, now he eats the wet food he gets. The older cat will still only eat applaws wet, and even then not very often, but she's 14 now and has never been big on wet food, so I leave her too it and give her applaws wet a few time a week.
I know it's hard, but I think of it this way. If you had a child and that child refused to eat any thng but mcdonalds, you'd carry on until that habit was broken and your child was eating a good diet, no matter how long it took. Why not with the animals?Sigless0 -
Are you ready
..... I think mine may rival your fussy one:o
Boy cat - only eats meat in gravy, he will eat:
Whiskas Casserole selection, Whiskas Traditional Gravy, Gourmet gold chunks in gravy, Sheba gravy
Girl cat - only eats pate, she will eat:
Gourmet pate
I have some Bozita just now that they will eat a bit of but not loads:(
I have tried:
Everything you can get in a supermarket!
Applaws
Purely
Grau
Smila
Cattesy
Animonda (both types)
Hi-life
Schmusy
Shiny cat
Smila
Denes
Natures menu
And loads more over the last year of so.... Yup, I did shop @ Zoo+:) - and tried practically everything:o
I think part of the problem is that they both love their dry and would quite happily just eat that - but I'd like them to eat more wet which is why I've been trying to get them to eat better quality wet.
It seems the higher the meat content, the less they like it:(
They do yeowl etc if they don't get their wet but I think that's more due to them having got used to it/getting fed everynight. If I don't give them something "they like", they will just go and stuff their faces with dry and eat twice as much of that:(Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
