Start your own social/activity club!
I have..it's called Time Out..only got 6 members so far, but we share the cost of travel and get group discounts on some things...
I don't charge a membership fee of any sorts.
Actually, it was this that made me giggle - the idea of charging 6 people membership fees. But, good on you jdp!0 -

ok...it costs me for the printing, stationery and phonecalls.
Yet I am not charging any one for anything!
But even Spice charged when they started out.. so do all the other clubs, not matter how small or big they are!Even when you feel like you have nothing, someone else has far less. Find them and help them. You’ll see why.....0 -
Im not a regular user of the forums on here but I felt I had to reply to this post. I signed up to plentyoffish 4 years ago, yes theres was alot of creeps etc but no more than Id meet on an average night out. Anyway I manged to chat to some nice guys and one in particular got on really well with chatting for hours on end. To cut a long story short last saturday I married him, feels like Ive known him all my life. He too thought dating sites were for desperate people but after a little convincing from his sister signed up after being single nearly 8 years after his divorce. It wont work for everyone but it does work sometimes. Top tips would be stick at it, if at first you dont succeedd try, try again and make the effort to contact people send proper emails not just winks show people you have something interesting to say. Good Luck!!!!:T0

I was in Spice for about 18 months! I left about 2 months ago. And I was in Spice Manchester a few years ago.
I liked Spice Manchester though I wasn't in it long.
I had a lot of problems with Spice Yorkshire - events getting cancelled at the last minute because there wasn't anyone to attend them, went to an event that was really, really poor and rather than apology, I got a very grudging refund and a pathetic email....
I liked the walks and the ten pin bowling but the walks cost a lot really - there's the £12 a month membership and then £6 per walk, more like £10 per walk if you book late because you've waited to see the weather forecast. Compare that with Ramblers - I think walks are free, membership is £30ish a year and they have social events too.
As for the ten pin bowling, my local Intervarsity club do that once a month like Spice and the membership is cheaper there.
I think Spice would be lovely if the franchisees realised that what they are running is not just a business but something that fulfills a social need in lots of people's lives. I am writing a book about loneliness at the moment and have done loads of research. I think organisations like that can play a huge role in helping people who live alone through divorce, bereavement or never meeting the right person. But if they cancel events at short notice without realising that for some people, that will leave an empty weekend, or if they run crap events and then are mean-spirited about saying sorry - well, I just think that if they were more caring, it would be a better organisation and ultimately, I think it would be more profitable because it would have a more loyal membership.
Spice Manchester used to have events that weren't profit-making for Spice - like going to the local Ceroc dancing venue. You paid the venue directly - you didn't pay Spice and you got a discount. More events like that would give people something back for their membership money.
I'm a member of two or three groups on facebook that are run by people who are still in Spice but are fed up with it. They're great groups - run with energy and enthusiasm!
I've often wished that I had the bottle to start a rival to Spice and run it as a social enterprise!0
