Feel like going back on benefits.

Don't think the maths add up here, or maybe I am being thick?
First of all the income you had on benefits is £391, as hb is not an income, you cant count this as income and then compare to the second amount which is wages - rent.
Secondly the incomeyou recieve now adds up to £536 based on the figures youve put. So 536 - the outgoings you listed = £366.
So you got £391 on benefits and now you get £366, therefor a difference of £25 a month. Would it be really worth being on benefits for that?0 -
I'm astounded, I get £10.50 a week CTC!!:j:jOur gorgeous baby boy born 2nd May 2011 - 12 days overdue!!:j:j0

Hubbie is now out working 12 hours a day, six days a week. For about £200 a week. We have no family time and getting to the point I can't afford to feed the kids or anything else for that matter. Can't even afford to save for the tax bill as his self employed.
Before we got £100 hb/ctb
£175 income support/ca
£183 CTC
£33 CB =£491
Now we get
£174 ctc
£74 wtc
£55 CA
£33 cb
£200 wages. =£509-£100 rent and council tax-£50 petrol- tax@ni £20=£339
So were over £100 a week worse over, We have also lost free school dinners and school transport.
You're double counting the HB/CTB.
On benefits you had £175+£183+£33 = £391 AFTER paying rent and council tax.
Working you have £409 after paying rent and council tax.
So, you're £18 better off.
Ok, you have costs to pay, but have you looked at hw much you can claim against tax liability for mileage (45p per mile can be taken from income for the first 10,000 miles, 25p above that).
Also, you are now in the position where for every extra £1 you earn / gain, you keep a much greater percentage of it.
You now have a future, rather than a life on benefits. It has to start somewhere.

I still don't see how we are £18 better of though as have to pay £20 tax and Ni, £15 Dd's bus fare, which I got free before and packed lunches for the kids. as before they got free school dinners.0

Yeah, paying for your own stuff with your own money sucks. That's life.0

Go back on benefits then. I would. On second thoughts Benefits are not going to be around for ever the country cannot keep borrowing money and paying out all these benefits for ever..Job he does doesn't pay minimum wage pays per parcel delivered and i'm still down £152 a week from what we were getting on benefits.0 -

I am in a similar position sort of. I checked this evening what I would get on Pension Credit and help towards the mortgage and no Council Tax to pay, compared to what I actually receive from my earnings + my pensions.
Strange as it may seem I am just over £40 a week worse off when working compared to what I would get off the State for sitting on my backside every day watching Jeremy Kyle!
Simplified, I am working 20 hours a week to lose £40!
I may be an old b*gg** but working is all that I have ever known, and it helps to keep me young and in touch with the world.
That alone is worth more than £40 a week. Besides which, I don't think my wife could cope with me under her feet every day!0 -
If only more people shared this work ethic.I am in a similar position sort of. I checked this evening what I would get on Pension Credit and help towards the mortgage and no Council Tax to pay, compared to what I actually receive from my earnings + my pensions.
