Been doing a little digging on this for you.

Firstly, the Pensions Act 2008 allows data sharing for this purpose, so it is legitimate.

Based on an earlier exercise, the DWP will supply the energy companies with a list of postcode areas where there are pension credit claimants (so, not personally identifiable). If you live in AN1 1AN and nobody claims pension credit in those houses, then your information will not be passed back to DWP (and possibly it could be a wider area - perhaps even AN1 1xx)

The supplier than provides a list of names and addresses of electricity account holders which is matched against the list of pension credit claimants. The relevant energy supplier is then notified that Mrs Jones of 1 Acacia Avenue AN1 1AN is entitled to receive the discount.

Last time out when this was done for the Energy Rebate Scheme, then about 53% of pension credit holders were matched to supply addresses (there are valid reasons why this may be the case). Letters were sent out to the remainder and the response increased the take up to about 61%.

So the data transfer is proportional - only what is needed to identify eligible customers is transferred between the two and no financial data goes either way, so no benefit details will transfer, no.

Thanks for that Brummie71 - your diligence is much appreciated !

So what happens when a Core group person lives at an address, but is not the electricity account holder?

Never mind, the account holder must be a rich person not in receipt of Pension Credit, so it's alright the old dear doesn't get anything.

They will get a letter from DWP. This will happen in all cases where there isn't a name match (so if your elec account is held in a misspelt version of your name, then this might be flagged).

Bear in mind, some of the Core group eligible won't be elec account holders anyway as they might be in long term care.

Should point out that this was the way it worked last time and the process was quite smooth, so I guess that's how they will do it this time. It is always possible that they will get Oliver Letwin to do the matching in the park manually and just dump the details in the nearest bin - anything is possible.
  • """Oliver Letwin to do the matching in the park""" nice one :D

    - former Professor of Philosophy, and another old Etonian, so thats ok then
    - nothing sensitive we were told

Other than one on how intelligence chiefs "failed to get the truth" on UK involvement in controversial terrorist interrogations.

Scottish Power have now published their Warm Homes Discount criteria, but you can't apply until 1 November. Hit the phones then, as you don't want to miss out on the offer.

(Link removed as it has now disappeared)

Only BG have done the decent thing (amazingly) and opened it to all comers.

The suppliers also seem to be using it to retain customers - if you Broader Group and you apply now, you won't get it until March 2012 and you will need to re-apply if you change suppliers in the meantime. As most of the suppliers limit the availability, this means that you will be tied in to your current supplier until Spring.

    for any scottish power users
the page is now up 1-11 with a form to fill out

    goto service-and-standards/warm-home-discount

nice to know the gov takes the tax back on this so we dont get £120 we actually get £114.29
  • the page for scottish power is here,
you have to apply on-line here is the form

(This has probbaly been posted already but I've not read the rest of this thread) this list of pages for all suppliers is here
  • Apologies for butting in. Bloke, 47 (sigh) on IS with disability premium here. Been with Southern Electric on their Care Tariff for three years. Heard and heeded the 'get in quick' on Radio4 Moneybox, for Warm Home.

Been told I 'seem' to have got this Warm Home contribution which will be all of £114 after tax and deducted from the first bill after the end of the financial year.

Received Gas/Electric statements today (26/11/11): My Care (social) Tariff was cancelled, without notification, just into September and I'd been 'automatically' switched into their Energyplus Argos, again, without notification.

Result: My Standing Charge on both gas and electricity has doubled and each unit increased by about 20% so, all-in-all I'm about £100 per year worse off per year, even if I do get this damn Warm Home thing.

Some world we live in, eh? :-(

£114 discount before tax means that you pay £120 less after tax.

The government doesn't 'take tax back' - they get less tax because of the discount.

I think - the change to the WHD from social tariffs was driven by the different way each supplier managed the social tariffs. This way will be more consistant, but means that the obligation to provide a social tariff has been/will be removed.
However, you can still get this discount no matter what tariff you are on so you can get the WHD along with DD discounts, DF discounts, online discounts etc
