someone bought a few items off me on ebay..... and paid all the postage...... when i posted them off... i felt soooo guilty at the diff in price..... i refunded a lot of the postage back...... not even a email back.....i could have kicked my concience that day....

on average how many books do you have listed at any one time ? ....i have read some peeps have about 900 books on amazon....also if you got this amount of books listed..... how many do you sell per week ?

sorry for the nosey questions......and i know its like saying how long is a peice of string ...lol......but there's a point.. where the law of average % kicks in......

Personally my ratio is 1:10 for good months and 1:15 for bad months. This month for example I have sold 87 items and I have about 850 listed.

especially the very comprehensive answer from a couple of days ago by rare_stuff, our resident guru ;)

    When did that happen? :rotfl:

I'm only ever certain I don't know much, I just know people that do know and where to get the answers

Though I imagine the first edition question does come up a lot, maybe a 'sticky' on the subject could be campaigned for and all the answers merged on to it?

I'd just like to know if the fees are better listing on Amazon than on Ebay? I want to sell some Home stuff (new) but worried that the fees on Amazon might end up being too high. Thanks

  • I find with amazon V ebay that i prefer amazon for several reasons,

Ive not (yet) had any problem buyers , ebay seems to bring out the worst in people

If you have something of value, say a book that often reaches £10+, then you need to have at least 2 people interested on Ebay and have the horrible wait of them bidding it out. On amazon you set the price and sit back and wait.

The payment is sorted and cleared when its reaches you, so no postal order / personal cheque hassle. And no worry of random paypal cash backs

although the fees are higher , the general price achieved is higher aswell.

Im sure others will disagree and give reasons to sell on ebay !!

  • I'm with Mishka on this, I prefer Amazon.

The final fees may be higher, but it's free to list so you will not lose anything by listing a book, some of my books are selling after a couple of years sitting on Amazon - I would not have had them listed for so long on Ebay.

One book I sold yesterday had been listed since June last year:

    Item(s) Subtotal: £17.15
Total postal charge to Buyer: £2.75
    Amazon.co.uk Marketplace fees: -3.00
    Applicable VAT amount: -£0.45
    Amount Due Seller: £16.45

As you can see Amazon took £3.45 in fees/VAT, but the book was listed for 8 months, I have not had to chase or wait for payment.

I think what I am trying to get across is that Amazon is 'value for money' from a seller's point of view. Ebay is okay too, for certain books - but you need to know they will sell.

another bonus is that its so quick and easy to list on amazon..... generally no photos etc just type in the title isbn etc and a few lines of description it even gives you the equivalent of a suggested price!!

I think the ratio of books listed to sales is quite random depending on the stock and condition of your books. I have been selling only for a couple of months and shifted 100 in Jan (with total of 200ish listed in Jan) and 89 in Feb (having listed 330ish in Feb) 99% which are non fiction.
    Dec - 21 Books
    Jan - 100 Books
    Feb - 89 Books
    March - 38 and counting
