I've never been to an auction and am a bit apprehensive. There is an auction house local to me that has a general sale most weeks. Catalogue is £2 and chances are I have to pay for parking as it is restricted at the sale rooms.
What kind of chances are there of there being saleable books (inspired by bukup!), DVD's Vids etc - not so much the very rare as I accept these are going to be a rare chance and lucky find - but reasonable stuff one can sell on at a respectable profit?
Do you have to register as a bidder or something when you get there for the viewing? I presume the catalogue is a necessary thing?
Is there anything else I need to know so I dont look a complete dork?
Thanks
Just a few of my tips to add to bukups excellent advice -
you might be able to view the catalogue on line saving yourself the £2.00 fee, so I'd search that out or phone them up, they will often email it to you for free.
When you have a price in mind for a lot be prepared to go past the traditional milestones of £10, 20, 30, 40 etc because your rival bidder may have made up their mind that they'll pay no more than £30 for a lot and drop out as soon as it hits £30 but if you're prepared to go one bid higher then it's yours
When you are rummaging through a box of stuff on the floor, try not to go whooopppeee when you see something you like, give it close but discreet inspection, then see if you can hide it under some tat, then push the box back under the table as far as you can without looking shifty
Take wrapping materials and boxes if you are likely to buy breakables, they may not have anything left for you to use
Keep a mental note about the commision fees in your head as you bid, don't let it be a surprise when you pay up
If you use the catalogue to write on, be sure that you don't let anyone see what you have picked out to bid on because you will do better if you haven't shown your hand before the lot comes up0 -
Where did you find out about this auction Boston? I've done a bit of surfing around but can't come up with anything in my area.
I have done quite well on the few books I've managed to pick up in charity shops in the past month, but can't quite get enough stock to move on with things.AMAZON MEMBERS CLUB - NUMBER 650 -

That's brilliant. Thanks very much for spending the time on that long post.
I know of the Canterbury one, it's just down the road from where I live. Most of their stuff is antiques and good stuff. I'm after the tat. I shall look into the others.AMAZON MEMBERS CLUB - NUMBER 650 -
