I never said they couldn't, but in terms of prior training and current responsibity the two jobs are poles apart. I don't have a problem with tube drivers earning above average wage, I think they should. However I think their earning more than a pilot is crazy. Just look into what even a newly qualified pilot has to have done to get that experience and the cost incurred in doing so.

I have the greatest respect for pilots - I work with them daily.

I just dont think it's true that all tube drivers earn 50k.

Sure a newly qualified pilot might earn less then *some* tube drivers who have been doing it for years, but a captain who is the person in charge of an aircraft would never be on a lower salary then any train driver.

tube drivers get a flat rate. they're all on £42k at the moment. the announced RPI linked pay deal is predicted to get them all up to £50k+ in about 4 years.

    i think you mean IMSO

    the S means stupid.

maybe we should put all the bog cleaners on 100k and binmen on £250k plus overtime.

this is why the public sector is dragging us all down.
  • Good discussion nothing too forthcoming from any tube drivers to tell us what they do to cover their salary.
I reckon there should be a secret training course to get some new drivers up to speed willing to take a lower salary and sack the existing ones.
I cannot fathom how that salary is justified.

I don't think you can just sack people these days though.

    I may be wrong...

Unlike a bog cleaner it's not a job that 'anyone' can walk into. You have to already be employed by LU to apply to become a train driver. Youhave to complete a number of tests before you are accepted, this stage has a very high failure rate.

The culture isn't great - working patterns are awful, working practices are unique.

It's a central London job with the public's safety in their hands - they deserve to be paid appropriately.

Their salary is justified because that's what the market can pay. Look at these directors, executives, high managers on £200k, £400k, £700k, £2 million. They are human like the rest of us and can only do so much, so do they do £2 million pounds worth of work? I think not. The market says they must earn more than another director, executive and the cycle goes on.

Bob Crowe has done the best for his members. He's paid to do that and has delivered the goods. Nurses, soldiers, firemen, teachers, carers should all be on £50k, but they aren't for all sorts of reasons. It's not the tube drivers are over paid, it's everyone else is underpaid.

The drivers are up at 3am, 4am most days or getting home at 1am, 2am other days. It is very unsocialable hours and often means weekends too. Driving trains is easy, everyone knows that, but it's the knowledge of rules and regulations when things go wrong that makes them worth their money.

I'm sure there are a few hundred Lithuanians who would do the job for £10k.

Coming soon to an employer near you!

In fact, the government must be loving it. Watching us proles argue amongst ourselves about how much we're all worth. Talking our wages down and down.

    Power to the people? Nah!
