why pay more than 1k for a handbag when you can get a perfectly good one made by small children in asia for less than a fiver down the market?

perhaps because there is an intrinsic 'quality' to industries and their products that don't just try to cut labour costs and the living standards of their worker?

believe it or not there is value in stuff that isn't monetary.

if you went to the supermarket, and there were two containers of milk next to each other, both exactly the same, except one was £1, and the other cost £2 which would you buy?

probably the £1 one. unless of course the £2 one threatened to cut off your supply of coco pops if you didn't pay £2 for it.

i know this is meaningless, but i thought it would slot in nicely with your rather strange points.

It's not that easy unfortunately, they will only hire trainee drivers internally so you will need to get employed at London Underground as, maybe, a Station Assistant to start with.

Yes, they'd need to know you are a union man first.

and a tube driver does not require the same level of training as a nurse, or have the same level of responsibility for the lives of others.

Nurses in the NHS have a job scale system consisting of 9 pay bands. A newly qualified nurse will start off on the bottom pay scale, but will move up the pay scale on an annual basis as experience develops. In addition to basic pay, there is also extra pay for staff who work in London.

A nurse in her first year of service will be paid lower then a fully trained tube driver. As the nurse gains experience and moves up through the pay scales, she is likely to be earning more then a tube driver.

Ninky does seem to have a bit of a public sector attitude.

Why buy something for £10.00 when it is just as easy to spend £20.00 on something which is no better or worse.

a tube driver trains for three months, and is then paid £42,750.

i have no idea for how long a nurse has to train and then work in order to be paid more than that, but i expect that it's quite a long time. like 15-20 years.

If you think that the nurse pay scale structure and training programme is unfair then fine, but it's a different issue.

A tube driver earns £42k - im not sure if it is jealosuly or what but this is an acceptable salary for the job in question and the hours, weekends, bank holidays involved.

Sure, the ‘actual’ driving is probarly the easy bit but there is much more knowledge required.

Understanding the signals and the routes (believe it or not but sometimes the signal control centre sends the train the wrong way – the driver has to sort this out OR better still, ensure it don’t happen in the first place)

Maintenance – drivers have to perform safety checks, have to know how to get their train moving if it breaks down in a tunnel.

Emergency - have to know how to evacuate a train in an emergency and guide people down the tunnel and to the surface.

Tube Train drivers have to be 100% alert and full concentration is required. What they can never do is sit on MSE and Facebook all day like many others who are jelous of their salary.

well a lot of people do pay more for similar products with added 'ethics' value. organic milk is very popular for example. as are free range eggs.

trades unions are merely an expression of rational self interest. this is an absolutely necessary part of a healthy economy. it's obvious that we don't have a healthy trades union movement or a healthy economy at the moment. go figure.

What are you going on about?

Are you suggesting we need "designer" tube drivers?

well we certainly don't want factory farmed ones.

cos it is better because that 'something' is actually a worker and the difference in payment will have a big knock on effect to their quality of life. or do you see no difference in being paid 30k or 50k a year?
