We had a million poles travel a thousand miles & found jobs. Not sure why I should pay for the million brits that decided to sit on their !!!!!!.

And I'd guess there really aren't many people that are 90 minutes away from a minimum wage job...

I read quite recently that the standard of living was actually so much better in Poland nowadays, that some Brits were going to live and work there.

I'm not denying there are some people who are quite resistant to getting a job, indeed, the closer I get to London on my way to work, the fewer bathroom lights seem to be on, but to be honest, I'd be resistant to dragging my aged carcass out of bed for £6 an hour, or a work trial scheme for Mr.Tesco-Extra, while he was publishing record profits.

Me too, and I think that is what is wrong with the system. It gives perfectly able bodied people the option to opt out of work at our expense.

Hopefully the tories will fix this, but somehow I doubt it..

I do wonder if this is something of a pyrrhic victory as there can be no logic in having a train driver more highly paid than many a commercial pilot.

Driverless tube trains will come at some point in the future and I can't help thinking that this moves them further up the political agenda. If the long-run cost of having drivers is significantly higher than the cost of automation followed by lower costs then the government and TfL will make those changes. Why would anyone think they won't? A good time to announce this would be early 2013, once the Olympics are out of the way.

And I'd guess that would depend on whether or not the job is vacant................

All well & good in theory, but during the years it would take to implement you can bet the unions will be causing chaos.. well at least without a rather large payoff for their members.

OK, name me one place in the UK that you think there are no minimum wage jobs within a 90 minute trip.

Or a 30 minute one for that matter.

So they should be allowed to carry on and we should have a tube system that due to lack of development is the poor sister of others in the developed world?

BA trained its non cabin-crew workers to crew planes during strikes with the impact that many, then most, flew. Several local government authorities have in the last year written to their staff telling them that they are changing their contracts and if they don't agree they will be sacked. Personally I would prefer a more concilliatory and negotiated approach, but that's not really Bob Crowe's way. That's why I think he's won for the short term at the possible cost of the long term.

Give London Underground to someone like Rupert Murdoch and the changes would go through. It would probably end up as a net tax contributor as well.

so here is the logic of some so-called free market thinkers on here......

find the lowest amount someone gets paid for doing a similar job in another country and that's the amount we should pay here.

why not set prices in the same way?

how much does a kilo of rice cost in india?

how much is a litre of diesel in USA?

how much does it cost to rent a one bedroom flat in cloud cuckoo land?

    oh such sense.....

and for those that don't like big government and red tape...apparently this doesn't apply when it comes to legislating against the collective actions of workers.
Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron

    This is absolutely not true.
