I also own a car, but it wouldn't be time or cost effective to drive to work in central London from where I live. The cost of parking and the congestion charge would make it impossible, plus, I'd have to leave home in the middle of the night to beat the traffic.

I would guess that there would be quite a few companies who are currently in London who would find it cheaper to re-locate closer to their workforce rather than pay the tax to cover the cost of their workers' travel costs. There would then be fewer commuters, so fewer trains/tubes would be required. I'd take a relative pay cut if my employer moved close to my home. It would be worth it to save the 15 hours a week I currently spend getting to and from work.

If not free, then the cost of travel to work should be tax deductable.

an excellent idea. the budget for transport for london alone is £10 billion a year, before you even add on the budget of each of the rail franchises operating commuter services, and the cost of maintaining and upgrading the track infrastructure.

i'm sure we can just make that all free at point of use.

why not just make everything free? why stop at transport. food should all be free as well, and clothing, and electricity and gas.

i'm sure this is definitely viable.

if everything was free then we wouldn't need to earn any money. abolish money. it will all be a lovely socialist utopia, where everyone is equal...

It would only be free to the worker. My employer would pay for it. If they didn't like it, they could move out of the city. If they did that, they could employ local people (me) except I wouldn't have to travel, so wouldn't need free rail fares.

Am I a communist? My dad would be proud! :D

I agree with that, can't see it ever happening though. Same with private schooling for your kids.

But you are leaving me a little confused - On one hand you're arguing for higher taxes to subsidise train fairs, on the other you want lower taxes personally for using trains. (incidentally, both of which would seem to benefit you personally)

Don't know if you've noticed, but our dear govt are a little strapped for cash at the moment. What other service would you cut to enable delivery of free (or tax deductible) public transport?

What about the unemployed? - surely they are in greater need of free transport than you?

What do you think your employer would do to your wages if they had to pay it?

Essentially your arguament seems to boil down to 'someone else should pay for my travel while I earn 50k' - are you Polly Toynbee by any chance?

    It's tough, isn't it?

I bet the CEO of National Express East Anglia doesn't have to think about his journey to work as hard as I do.

I don't know what I'd cut to pay for it. Good job I'm not an elected representative. I'm just a wage slave. :)

you don't want to pay the cost of getting to work, so either your employer has to pay the cost, or it has to relocate itself so you can walk there! excellent plan.

    have you any serious ideas?

    Who is Polly Toynbee?

The unemployed could travel for free if it were all free, couldn't they?

My employer could leave London if they didn't want to pay the travel costs (although if we're being specific, I doubt my employer would due to the nature of their business).

I travel on the train every morning with people who (like me) don't earn £50k. We all still have to pay £3900 for our tickets though.

Well I'd vote for you, I like free stuff, espcially when it comes from a magical money pit that noone has to put into.

can we please have a free ferrari factory as well? I'm not keen on travelling with the riff-raff.

I could throw myself onto the dole once getting to work isn't cost effective, I suppose.
