I have read a little about recieving your internet connection through your set top box. So is it possible to have your pc broadband through the same set top box which provides your cable tv? Hmm im a little confused...you can prob tell. If this is true what is the difference between broadband through s.t.b or through an external ntl modem? what are the upsides and downsides or have i got it completely wrong!0

Yes, broadband works through the digital set top box (I assume all, worth checking with NTL). I believe one limitation is 1MB service with Pace boxes - anything more and you need a new Samsung box. I do not know if there is any difference with the standalone modem, apart from potentially having flexibility to move it around the house (depending on where the line comes in) and with STB only needing one cable in?!

The STB has a modem inside it...........0

Have you got a stand alone modem or do you plug into the set top box???If you plug into the STBox is it a Pace one??If it is you will have to make that call as the Pace box's will only go to 1Mb so they will Not upgrade.I'm on 750 and rang them yesterday to find out why it wouldnt upgrade and was told becauase its a Pace STBox.So they have ordered me a Samsung STBox but it is going to take 3 weeks..........
hi sideboards
its a stand alone modem that i have so should be ok to get upgraded

I phoned NTL this morning to get upgraded from 750K to 2Mb. Unfortunately I've got a Pace STB and they're unable to upgrade the box until May and they're not offering appointments after the end of April (the system can't cope :-( )
On the up side they answered the phone at 9 am within a minute of me phoning them, which is a giant leap forward for NTL service.

hav tried a few and it says i am 625.04kbps is that pretty bad ?
For a 700Kbps service, this is acceptable.
BB speeds never come up in tests as fast as your top limit. Anywhere over 85% of your speed is OK. To work it out divide your test speed by your quoted speed, then times 100.
e.g.
625.04/700 x 100= 89.29%How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Hehe...!
Looking forward to the upgrade....but not the capping
I've been paying £18.99 for the 1.5mb (cable modem) service with discounted phone line for 4-5 months...and have a further 6-7 months remaining at this price!!!
When the upgrade kicks in....it will be 3mb for £18.99....Loving it!
Just ring to say you want to cancel, and they will usually offer something back, well worth it...saved a packet!

Does anyone know if you upgrade do you have a minimum term to fulfil as I don't want a new 12 month contract or anything as I won't need the service in a few months?0

Thanks everyone for helpful advice.Examine what is said, not him who speaks.0

I was on the 1.5meg speed, which I pay a pretty high premium for - 37.99.
My speeds now 3meg but I'm paying 13 quid more for it than those on 2meg
Can I downgrade and still get better speeds than I was on and save myself a packet?Phil0
