Phil, my brother did a philosophy degree don't you know? He started doing agency work for a bank, in a customer support role. You know what he does now? He works at Canary Wharf. You know how old he is? 23. He was a Northen Lad. You've got no excuse - if you want something, you go for it.

I work with loads of Northerners, in fact I am a minority because I grew up in London.

I started work in the city 4.5yrs ago straight from uni and earnt £17K, I earn 3times that now. You do have to start at the bottom, precious few get grad places at £35k+

I look at companies like HAYs and Reed which are meant to have a good selection of jobs and the vast majority of jobs that earn over 25k in the North are recruitment consultants and Sales Managers.

The top paying jobs (outside of academia and civil service) tend not to state the salaries so again it's not clear.

I live in Wiltshire (not exactly in an urban centre) and earn quite a lot more than £20k, thanks!

  • There are 2 universities in Manchester and one in Salford so nothing stops them getting local staff( just as you do in India) and sacking your London staff if they wont move)

(I know Graduates earn no where near 25k for starters)

There's got to be an appetite from someone high up in the company to move up north in the first place. If that desire isn't there, then that's it. Employees in the best companies are not interchangeable like pawns on a chess board; any reputable company will do its reasonable best to keep its staff happy, and if that involves staying in London, that's what they do. Sometimes other choices are made - our entire Back Office were made redundant a few years ago because the operation was moved to Canada (where they pay peanuts and get monkeys, so experience tells me, but it enabled them to show a costsaving of a couple of million on the balance sheet to keep the shareholders happy).

I know there are many good people in the North who are not Monkeys, but yet firms dont move, it is the way it goes as you say.

They moved North, yes. But they are more like the Civil service than a Firm IMO

So they say if you want something go get it. But if it is true or not I dunno.

It is true - you've got absolutely no excuse. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and start doing something to make your life better. What makes you think that you are so special you should have everything handed to you on a plate? It doesn't work like that. If you don't take, you don't get.

Sure - you (generic) have the absolute freedom to go through life passively as a victim. The choice is there to be made.
