Because London is the busiest city in the world in terms of global finance; it has an international reputation as such and has had for several hundred years. It's where global clients expect to find the services. There are other kinds of firms based around the country, but London is the place to go for investment finance. You can complain if you like, but I don't think much of your chances against the tide of history.

You see this what upsets a lot of people where I live. The big fims sack people in the North of England and move production to China and treat people shockingly bad there all in the name of cost. But yet these firms wont give up their London Pricey HQ and base in Salford say-- which would be a huge cost saving. It just is a bit annoying to many that strange way of working.

Do you have any evidence to back that up Philly boy? Most people I knew up north earnt well over 20K a year

You look in the jobs paper here and every job is low paid work like Call centres. Maybe not completely reflective I admit. Lets say then there are very few jobs that pay over 25 000 here to be more forgiving.

Okay, then if you can not remove them. Why should all that wealth be based in London? What about having these firms based in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield? It seems somewhat unfair to have all the best paying jobs in London when there are almost no jobs paying more than 20 000 PA in the North.

If you have to stick with system, why not spread these jobs around just prove it is not a Southerns only club.
Well I wonder if that's not a bit like saying why not have a gold mine in Norfolk, it hasn't got one, jolly unfair. Yes I know is's dematerialised wealth but still... A littlle stuff can and has moved to Leeds, Edinburgh and other places AFAIR. There could be bigger movements at any moment, and I think it is almost moment. But they are more likely to be to Frankfurt or Mumbai, my guess.
Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.
  • Phil, as a graduate, you are likely to start on a far lower salary than £25k anyway.

Again it's supply and demand ... maybe they considered that not enough of their employees would want to live in Salford to make it worthwhile having a base there (never been there myself so no idea what it's like).

You also have to consider that your local newpapers may not accurately reflect the job opportunities within companies. Many positions are filled internally.

Phil, you don't tend to get all these jobs advertised in the paper...

I look at companies like HAYs and Reed which are meant to have a good selection of jobs and the vast majority of jobs that earn over 25k in the North are recruitment consultants and Sales Managers.

If you don't like it and don't want those kind of jobs, move. You're trying to run before you can walk - it's extremely rare to walk out of your graduation ceremony into the job of your dreams. You have to expect to start low and work up.

There are 2 universities in Manchester and one in Salford so nothing stops them getting local staff( just as you do in India) and sacking your London staff if they wont move)

(I know Graduates earn no where near 25k for starters)

I am not talking about me personally, just the general feeling you get when look at these sites.
