From the people I know who have applied for city/ international firms jobs are people who have family in that sort of work and they come from Home counties or London anyway. Maybe because it feels less Alien to them.:beer:0

Well there are thousands of jobs in the City and Canary Wharf (same sort of thing now), and it stands to good reason that people who apply for these jobs live mostly within reasonable travelling distance, hence their Home Counties residence. Also, if they have family in the same line of work they probably will have a good idea of what preparation is required?Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

That could explain it, as I say it feels known and not Alien to them.:beer:0 -
I look on Reed everyday at jobs and the only jobs in my areas are recruitment consultants.:beer:0

They recruit from all over the world. Some of them when they recruit, because they have so many excellent applicants to choose from - understand, more than one has said life is not fair, they are not in it for the sake of doing justice - will not bother with your uni because they can get more than they can easily choose between just from Oxbridge and Imperial and not many others. (And if they are foreign they may not know there are many others.)studentphil wrote:From the people I know who have applied for city/ international firms jobs are people who have family in that sort of work and they come from Home counties or London anyway. So it is just as well you have turned them down anyway.
I guess they all do consciously or unconsciously look for face-fitting, maybe the Americans more consciously than others, at the same time they are all international so what that means is not the same as it would traditionally have meant in Britain and they all boast of their diversity.
And you are wrong to imagine they would not value a philosophy graduate.
As for level of skills and knowlege, again life is not fair, and I would say it is not generally more than the best postdocs or poorly-paid lecturers gaining or Profs. gained a certain standing at your uni also with long working hours for some years particularly in the hard sciences: the hours in the City are notoriously long, then again OHOH TBH I think I'd rather do that than coalmining even for the same money and shorter hours.
Now if, moving away from yourself, there are any more general issues of principle you think your points lead to...?Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.0 -
There is an interesting point of big business values non- business graduates, but yet more medium sized and regional firms see a non- business graduate as worthless.:beer:0

That is not a very philosopical point though.Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.0
