Brenda - where did you get your fleece from if I may ask and also can you share your dehydrating techniques?????
Just come back with another pound of chestnuts and am wondering if I can do marrons glace for Xmas pressies - that would be a bit different wouldnt it! Apart from that its been a rather useless preppiing day - Im trying to paint my sitting room concrete floor in sections and its proving very time consuming and smelly. I hope to get it finished tomorrow then I can at least feel the floor is protected for the winter. Nxt will be finding a couple of washable (like once a week due to dogs) rugs. I wish I had an IKEA near me.

I now have my winter tyres :D they are in the boot of the car, so I need to get them out and put them in the shed. They will go on the car after my last work trip in November, unless it snows before...

"Yak Trax" @ the ready for the icy pavements should they occur !!!

"Duvet part 2" available if gets too cold and a TV with inbuilt Dvd there too!

"Snug Rug" can be donned if it's icy cold.

"Halogen Heater" can give a quickie warm up if needed.

"Washing Machine" will use fastest spin to get washing dry quicker with the minimum central heating on time and combine with bath night too (make use of heat)

"Thinking" of a front door curtain:- Salvaged a 5ft long wooden pole (1 inch across or 4 inch around) Need a way to attach each end to the wall, suitable curtain attachments and cheap 8ft x 5ft curtain (maybe charity shop)

Haven't read back to catch up yet but was reading the Daily Mail re possible power cuts and I'm wondering what meals people have planned for if the power goes out?
Might throw up a few good ideas from the usual I do :D

do you have the link to the article by any chance? we have storage heaters so that's a bit of a concern for us. guess i'd better buy some more candles, they would heat up my bedroom fairly quickly if the door was closed as it's a small space

i got my other bedroom thermal curtain made and up as well as putting bubblewrap up in both bathroom windows. if it weren't for the seam i had to have (just wasn't wide enough) i don't think you could really even tell i had anything in the window from downstairs

i also used the draught excluder in the warped inner window bit, looks so much better than the paper i had been using previously and i can just leave it inplace for flat inspections (though i'll remove the bubble wrap when she's here :p)

tomorrow i plan to check for draughts under the front door and get some of that door excluder mentioned earlier if necessary as well as putting up the bubble wrap in the bathroom window and doing the tiny wee panes of glass in the front door with bubble wrap

other than that everything is pretty much done unless i need to buy more candles, now, if only the grass would stop growing so i could stop mowing :p
  • anyone know where i can get cheap hot water bottles from?? can;t find the right stoppers for mine, moved house since last winter, and this new house is really warm, but the attic has no heating and my eldest son (11) sleeps up there, so far its been warm, but last night it was a bit chilly, all the hot water bottles in places like home and bargains, wilko and B&M were about £6.99, only paid about £2.99 last year.

Happycamper Maybe try places like Lloyds chemist or other chemists around where you live? Here they are selling them for £1.99 but everywhere else is expensive as you say :(

My Cotton Traders welly/snow boots arrived today.... They are Lussssshhhhhh, lovely and furry inside, although because of the suede on the ankle and upper bit they will be more comfy when worn in as still a bit stiff.

I was going to get them for my Mum's birthday in December but they are showing as £45:(
    Peace will be mine
could do better - must try harder

You need a discount code - there is a link further back on this thread which has it or look on the Grabbit board...

    Welcome smeeth!

I have to second the recommendation to be careful about the ice. My DH slipped on ice years ago and had a serious break in his leg, requiring surgery and a metal plate. My father had a slip on the ice 2 years ago, fractured his skull, suffered brain damage, never fully recovered and passed away in March of this year. Ice can be so treacherous! Please do all you can to be careful!

:eek::eek: OMG How awful for you. So sorry about your Dad :A - Reading such things makes me petrified of going out in snow and ice - but makes me really glad I bought the Yaktrax Pros and gave my old versions to Mum and StepMum.

Someone posted about wearing socks over shoes - I had no idea this worked!!! I think I will use my old non matching socks for the DDs over their shoes.

So easy to make sure you have a few pairs in the car in case of emergencies too!

    Is it very effective?
