savingqueen wrote: »Hello everyone :j,
another newbie here though been lurking for a while! Very impressed with the efforts you've all made. I've been feeling very behind with winter preps but then started listing what I have actually achieved and don't feel so bad.
Done:
new zip in DH's winter jacket & washed his gloves, hat, scarves
bought thick wool coat for DS1
DS2 has a lovely wool coat too in great condition passed down from a kind friend
vests, dressing gowns/winter PJs all washed or bought as necessary for DS1 & DS2
waterproof trousers for all of us (DH doesn't know and he will laugh his head off when I show him!)
thermal long john type things for boys for playing out in snow (obviously with other clothes on top)
blankets/throws all out
bought cat loo & litter for our 2 old cats - when weather gets bad they will stay in all night (and probably day too if it snows)
boiler serviced
chest freezer defrosted ready to be re-stocked properly (currently only half full but full up with bottles of water)
cats going for their annual checks and boosters on Sat
Must do:
sort out scary  spare/junk/storage room for space to store supplies etc (we have no loft space so everything gets dump in tiny spare room)
re-stock freezer
do inventory of other stores and replenish - to include food, meds, basic toiletries, cat food, treats & litter, loo roll of course:rotfl:l and anything else I can think of
sort out car bits eg thick cardboard/salt etc for snow and ice
line most/all curtains
change antifreeze in car from summer to winter mixes
bubblewrap or similar for downstairs loo window and front door
general draughtproofing - windows etc
make downstairs loo warmer (no heating and an outside wall brrrrr) - some sort of carpeting/rug at least
bring big rug down for lounge (no carpet)
consider a couple of washable rugs for kitchen (no carpet)
sort winter duvets out (autumn on just now)
get my and boys hats etc out
buy DH wellies (though insists he doesn't need them and will walk 1.5 miles to train station in trainers in the snow and have wet feet/trousers all day)
replace bedding in cats' beds in shed
see if can change boys swim classes from old pool to new one (because old has no heating in manky old changing rooms and new does)
finish winter birthday/xmas pressie buying - someway to go - in case of bad weather.
get rest appointments out of way before its cold eg. dentist check-ups
Hope to do:
sort out bathroom - mouldy ceiling and bath sealant etc
clean outside bins before too cold (they hum so much could play a tune!)
if I get all above done,:rotfl: I can add more!!
EEEK the to-do list seems very long. Oh well I suppose its on-going and its not cold here....yet
Keep up all the good work everyone
Wow!! What a list, it puts me to shame!! Do you have winter and summer duvets? Do you tend to go for quite expensive duvets or cheaper ones?0 -

Not the prettiest letterbox draught-proofer but my DM cut some shoulder pads she didn't want out of a blouse and drawing pinned them just above the inside flap
(laugh I may but it works). She changes them for new ones periodically but to my knowledge she's done this for at least the past 30 years! Not advisable on a upvc door, of course...

Does anyone know how the sizings translate?
I would think that S/M are ladies and L/XL mens?
Might also get DM a pair for Christmas!:D
I've just bought a pair of Snow Trax from Asda and the sizing on the back states: S/M = 2.5- 6.5 UK Womens, 3-7 Mens and the L /XL fits 7+ for women and 7.5-10 for mens shoes. I bought the S/M forgetting that my winter walking shoes are a 7 and I think they might ping off!0 -
swapped the cats litter over today. They are now on Worlds Best. Poor courier man had to haul a 15kg bag to my door. Then i had the pleasure of hauling it to the back on the house! Still, its changed and they are both going in it happily! Used about half the bag and it meant to last two cats about 45 days so hoping i will only be spending on litter every 5 weeks or so.
Got some baking done today, just a few fairy cakes but they have been iced and decorated (and taste tested!). Not too much else to be done this week due to lack of funds! Was debt free then ex walked out and COVID hit.0 -
We have done the butchers shop this afternoon and it has been stacked away in the freezer.
We have checked with our house insurance and if -God Forbid - we do get a serius power cut which affects everything in there then we have insurance to cover the cost of it! You might all want to check your contents insurance to see if that is up to date!Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

Just a quick update before collecting the mini kittens from school,
My Cotton Traders welly/snow boots arrived today.... They are Lussssshhhhhh, lovely and furry inside, although because of the suede on the ankle and upper bit they will be more comfy when worn in as still a bit stiff.
Todays preps have been minimal as I have only just finished work, but managed to get out in the garden and prune the 2 climbing roses and our little rose bush, hoping that they sprout lovely next year.
Getting back to the boots, if you missed my earlier post, Cotton Traders are having a sale and these boots that were £45 are now £22.50 with free delivery codes also,, check out the "grabbits" section.
Hope your all having a frugal, but warm day.:TThriftkitten

The 12 metres of fleece I ordered arrived today. I am putting 4 up at living room and bedroom windows behind the curtains, and 4 up at living room door which has glass panels besides it so it is going to hang outside so as not to have all that fleece on view. Cant wait to get it done but too busy today dehydrating cooking apples from a neighbours glut. Also started stockpiling - 2 bottles Greek olive oil from Lidl 3.99 each. A bargain!0
