Ifonly -many thanks - got a pair of clip-ons in my amazon basket waiting for pay day! Also some apparently fabulous water repellent windshield cleaner which might do a better job than the window wipes I got from Asda.
Been out foraging for chestnuts and although they are small (slightly smaller than a walnut) I got a whole pound in about 15 minutes so am very pleased - dogs didnt like having to stand around near all those prickles tho' so if I go again I'll go solo.
Also tracked down the draught - its NOT the bottom of the front door for which I made a fantstic draught excluder - its the side that opens! What do I do about that as I cant possibly afford to replace the seal thngy (its a double glazed UPVC door but about 10 years old I think)
debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)
  • Darkrev thanks for posting the pic, you look so happy and gorgeous - it has actually made me cry:o. Congratulations and wishing you many happy years together.:D

(Before you all think "loon", I've got the cold which tends to make me very emotional - I also cried watching both ER and BBC Breakfast's Teen awards bit this morning:o and it almost certainly won't be the last time today).

One step closer towards winter today ..... drum roll please ..... I had my first bowl of Oat so Simple this morning!

It's just as yummy as I remember - I tend to go for the "original" as you get more (12) in the box:o and add my own flavourings. This morning was golden syrup!

Apart from that, not a lot of progress from me - my foot's been killing for the past couple of days and not sure why:(. I phoned my consultant's sec this afternoon and she's going to get back to me tomorrow so hoping they'll come up with something.

Dizzybee do you have a local woodwork place anywhere near you? We have one that makes fences and I popped in this afternoon with my Ikea bag for the sawdust.

Luckily they had just bagged it up for disposal anyway so had 6 large sacks off them for free.

That should take us through to next year for the guinea pigs!

Good to know it works as it's an insecticide and spiders aren't...
I'm buying this on my next order.

As an aside, does anyone know if conkers really repel them cos if they do I'm out collecting right now! The wolf spiders are huge and run so fast in our house. We trap them under glasses to try to get ourselves used to them but no, we are still petrified!

    Welcome Peking

Re Spiders..... Well OMG  I used the Raid spray around all the doors and when I went out yesterday, a few corpses were lying about the place including one really horrid looking, not quite dead, spider... Sent pic to a friend of mine who has identified it as a False Widow spider :eek::eek::eek: Worse still is that one was found at a hotel fairly near my house

To say I am carping myself is an understatement - I am really jumpy at any little itch or tickle :( I will be doing a deep clean at the back of my living room near the door but before I dare to de-clutter there, its going to be re-sprayed with Raid and left for a couple of days.

I have to say, since using it around skirting boards and doorways, I haven't seen any of the big running spiders... or any other ones :T

Right, I am off to see if I can gain some perspective as the real risk of being bitten by one of these is low... Not as low as it was before it moved here tho!

(re conkers - no. They do not work - old wives tale. I once saw a web spun over a conker that was placed on a window sill to deter them!)

Hello Peking Duck and welcome I hope you find some useful things to use in preparation for winter.

Tooti - prioritse everything for outside to be done, then when the weather turns bad you can turn your attention to inside stuff a kind of making hay while the sun shines if you get my drift!!!

With regard to the windscreens, have you also cleaned the inside of your windscreen as well. Car heaters blow a film onto the screen that leaves an almost like greasy marking, ordinary window cleaning spray should shift it, then make sure your outside screen is clean as well. Also, look at your screen wash make sure that you have the right concentration in your bottle! Your eyes may have also become sensitised to light and this is not helped now by the neon/zenon light units fitted in cars which are extremely powerful and will cause glaring.

  • darkrev, your dress is beautiful. You look amazing in the photo, so radiant and happy.

    Welcome peking_duck!

I'm [STRIKE]skiving[/STRIKE] relaxing a little before I get back to work. Have just got home. Will have my soup and then need to get back to work... I'm worse than a teenager sometimes with all this procrastination.

WHen I'm done with the stuff I've had to bring home (and completeted my internet shop), I'm going to set up a blog for students with instructions for adverse weather. Some schools have them but ours doesn't yet. I feel like a killjoy but I just don't want a repeat of last year's chaos, particularly with the December/January exams!

One thing I have remembered from the last 2 winters is how difficult it was to see at night when I wasdriving home from work - the lights from the oncoming cars seem to blur and refract in my windshield no matter what I clean it with AND its a new windshield. Is there anything I can reliably use - either cleaner or screen or something to stop me driving like a VERY old lady at 25 mph and annoying all the other road users????

I used to hate night driving till I tried a old pair of reactolite sunglasses - they worked a treat in cutting down the glare but stayed light enough to not block everything else ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Tugrin - door seal - rubber type, not foam, with adhesive backing is available at Lidl for £1-99. There's enough for 2 doors or you can put it on as a double width seal round one door - it's joined in the middle so it can be used as single or double width. I have a door curtain for the evenings to stop the draughts but wanted something to stop them during the day and this worked a treat on my door.
