Preparing for winter III

  • Hi, no no, I am an older mam, most women my age have kids whp've left home :o
I've filled a bag for the charity but she has got one coat I bought for ''later on'' which fits now so she should be ok. I used ot get her all in ones for the winter but she's a bit too big for those now. x

I resisted them last year, & haven't looked at all this year, mainly cos I was a bit disappointed with some of the stuff I got... But sports direct had some good snow & ski stuff last year... Or L1dl do stuff, but I'm not sure how big they go.
Spikyhedgehog - the dryer doesn't create any condensation. On the contrary it keeps a dampish corner of my landing much warmer and seems to dry it out.

The only faff is loading it up with clothes, just a bit time consuming to fit them all on to get maximum drying power. But that's prob because I have it in a corner so can't get round to reach the back of it.

Not sure how much it was as it was a pressie but it's much less guilt-inducing than switching in the tumble drier!

    Hope this helps,

    X

Thank you, Moneysaverme, & Becky 2. Will add one to my wish list, & work out when I can get it ;-) hopefully before Christmas!

Going to work out how to make welly liners from a fleece blanket that had a corner nibbled off by a hamster...

Just purchased the dry soon heated airer from Lakeland too so hopefully that will help reduce my electric bill over winter.. it will be used primarily to dry jeans and towels as they take so long in the dryer. :D Of course it would have been rude to not grab some of their amazing oter stuff.. so what I will save this winter I probably just spent on extras but my niece and oldest grandson are sorted for christmas now and I got OH a piping set.. ;)
I've had my Lakeland heated dryer for a couple of years and it's great. We have night storage heaters so can't put anything over them to dry. My heater is on the landing, and it dries a full load overnight, and also 'takes the cold off' upstairs.
Thanks for the lists of 'what to do'. I've been reading them and thinking, 'Do I have those? Do I need to do that?' etc.
I have a huge collection of candles, mostly given as presents.
Need to buy more matches and keep in a jam jar - they always seem to get damp in our house. Probably because DD leaves the box in the bathroom.
Still have salt from LY, and we buy batteries in big boxes, because DH says it's better value, which it is so long as they don't stop working before we use them.
Should probably buy more tins and packets, which will scupper my grocery challenge.
House has just been cleaned etc. outside so no more to be done there for now.
Hoping for an Indian Summer, so I'm putting off getting the Winter woolies out just yet!
Will have to check meds shelf to see if everything is in date before buying more cold/flu stuff.
Checked our 'shoebox (Christmas charity for children) stock' this afternoon and I need to make more hats and scarves - quickly:eek: I thought we had enough, so I've been making other things.
Half a scarf knitted today. Well it'll keep me out of trouble!

confession time. I stuck mine on the wrong way last year. I only learned recently that it should be the bubbles to the window... but it worked just fine for me last year ;)

ah,u and me both fuddle.......sticks better our way:rotfl:
  • That's what I'm hoping too grn - I had to buy soooooo many "one off" things last year - snow shovel for drive, another for the car, fleece linings for curtains (which are still up!).

    Must get that list done!

 Hi Rising! Long time no speak! We had lots of one off stuff as it was our first winter in our first house. Should be much more manageable this time (thankfully due to me having zero income at the moment!)
  • & i cannot get bubble wrap to stay on unless I use sticky tape... I did the bathroom window while DS2 was in the bath the other day, & it stayed on all night, but after I'd opened the blind in the morning, it fell off again! So the front door & downstairs loo have bubble wrap sticky taped in place.

I realised the other day how much difference blinds can make - I'd shut the curtains at the front of the house, & the blinds in the kitchen, but not yet the downstairs loo, & went in there to feel it was colder in there despite the tiny size. Blinds & curtains getting shut as soon asd it gets dusky now!

i suspect that blinds, being so close to the bubble wrap probably either touch the bubble wrap or blow wind over it when you open or close them. since it's only surface tension of the water from the damp sponge or spray bottle that holds the bubble wrap on to begin with once it's dry a little bit of air directed in that way may make it fall off

i usually have to refresh the water on my windows at the corners a few times over winter but in your circumstances i think the tape is the best option as it will just keep happening

i got two loads of washing dry out on the line today, it was glorious again but i hear there is rain coming soon. also got a few brambles some of the last dog rose petals that i'm going to mix them in with some fruit leathers we're making and a few very late blooming elder flower heads, again getting mixed in with the fruit leathers.

most of the brambles, most of the gnarled little apples and most of the elderberries need a week or more before they are ready.

i'm gonna wait on bubblewrapping everything for a bit, we have these horrid old warped wooden window frames and some i have finally managed to get properly closed and locked so i can't open those again this year. if i wrap the place up now i won't be able to breathe if we have another warm day :rotfl:

    Hi all

Sorry ive been awol from OS board and focusing on the DFW stuff but thought id pop on here and catch up (not had a read back yet!) and let everyone know im slowly making a dent in my prep :)

So far, DD has winter boots (ugg type if you will), Still needs wellies and new slippers for her ever growing feet!
DS has Wellies but still needs slippers.
DH has slippers, they arrived this week :)

Got the radiator bought for the family room and trying to sort the plumber to fit it (he pulled his back and had to cancel last week). Also finally got a door on the family room/hallway so that will make a BIG improvement seeing as we havent had one for the past 3 Winters lol

Aiming to get someone to quote us this week to put the floor tiles down in the kitchen so i can then get the skirting on and draughtproof the rest of that room! I also need someone to quote us to take gas fire out and fit a new one (need to price up new one too!) - These are the 2 most expensive jobs.

Going to clear some space in the cupboards to create a stock pile of tinned foods and get some bottled water in. I also want to make a list of things for a car box and a house box for emergencies (any help/tips?)

Need to get some sticky draught excluder stuff for the 3 ill fitting windows we cant afford to replace this year too!

Im on the lookout for Thermals all ages (particularly good ones for DH who cycles to work!), So if anyone knows of any at a good price, please let me know :)

Hope everyone is well, cant believe its September already!
