This may have been mentioned, so forgive me if it has.

It's worth checking whether you have a local buy and sell group on Facebook (try searching your town on the site). Mine is called Basingstoke Facebay and I have been able to a) declutter a lot of things like an old slow cooker/steamer/perfume etc and b) pick up some things to put away for bargain prices.

I have found a few things to put away for winter. Today I got a really nice winter jacket, down-filled and good as new (name brand, although that doesn't bother me) for £5.

iDH has a drill on loan from work so we can finally get the pole and curtains up at the patio door :j I'm very excited about it :o

Ice grippers came. They don't look like they would do the trick but hopefully i'll be proven wrong when the snow comes. :D

One fleece bought in the shopping from Asda - £2.89 - for DD's bed. 1 ore needing to be bought for other DD plus I would like some more (2) Irma throws to put on their beds as sheets. DD's bed base has broken so it looks as though very soon she'll have to sleep with the mattress on the floor until we can get a new bed base. It's laminate flooring so a but concerned at how cold it will be. I'm hoping a blanket or two underneath will sort it out. A bit worried about it actually.

Thanks for the ideas on what to do for a winter car box. :)

Wheat bags that you pop in the microwave for an instant hotwater bottle? Can you make them yourself? Would a dried pulse work just the same at all?

    ETA:

I found out you can make your own rice bags.

I was lacking motivation this morning but now I want to get my jobs done so I can sit at my sewing machine :D

Fuddle I would put a request on your local freecycle/freegle group for a bed base, you might be lucky as people tend to replace whole beds these days rather than just the mattress or have a look in your local paper you might find some firms that deliver only, no showrooms that are really, really cheap which would do you until you can save up for a really decent bed......we bought a guest bed that way a couple of years ago and cost us £30 + £6 for delivery for the bed with base, nothing great but did friend who stayed 6 weeks then we freegled it....last thing you want it DD sleeping on the floor during the winter especially if it turns out to be as bad as they say it is going to be.
Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

My DS (adult 32) sleeps on a mattress on the floor as advised by physio. He's done that for 12 years and wouldn't sleep any other way now. His GF has got used to it too now and loves it.

We sleep on a futon mattress on a floor board and pallet base and have done for 20 years.

google pallet beds or bed base and you'll see some fab ideas, and pallets are free most places.
  • FUDDLE - if you can't locate a bed base, you could pop the matress on top of some upturned heavy cardboard boxes, which will give her some insulation. You could fill them with newspaper underneath and put a blanket over the top before you put the mattress on this should keep her warm Cheers Lyn x.

Oh excellent, thank you MrsL. :T We have a large box that the kids have been using as a tent from other DD's new bed (oh the irony :rotfl: ) so will keep that.

I'm hopeful that freecycle will come up trumps though. Fingers crossed.

My eldest DD had to sleep on a mattress on the floor for over 3 years - we finally managed to buy her a bed a couple of weeks ago. I should imagine a couple of blankets underneath it would be fine, plus one on top of the mattress.
