I would love to know what the window company say about your damaged windows abwsco. We have covered ours up for now. Just not got the cash to see to it yet. Seems strange that if it is the cold weather that's done it, why hasn't it happened to everyone?!
Someone else replied saying it can't be the temperature change (sorry on my phone so can't look back), just interested to know what it could be.
I have done a few things to prepare for the cold. Stocked up on flour to make my own bread, have a little stockpile of basics thanks to my newfound couponning hobby, including longlife milk which was a big mistake (bought sterilised by accident, yuk!)
I'll let you know what the window company say. Only info I could find on the www was problems with some velux windows or the inside of the windows getting too hot:o We don't have heating on in the bedroom and we have eight windows in the bay so why have only these top two gone.
Welcome to the thread and happy preparing:)0 -
Forgot to post a warning for fellow loo roll hoarders, If you store them in a vanity unit under your sink watch out for leaks. I've had to throw away 20 this week:eek: as we had a leaking tap and didn't know until the loo rolls had soaked up all their maximum capacity of water and the drip came through into the kitchen. Managed to dry out 10 though even if they are crinkley now-lol0

We moved house recently and can't afford to replace leaky double glazing units which are needed in some rooms. (Windows steam up when the sun has been shining on them, then clears again.) I did look it up though and you can buy a sealed unit to replace them from places like Wickes or your local glaziers, usually cheaper than 'double glazing people' and apparently within the scope of the average diyer. The diy thread will give you more info. Hope that helps
Sun's shining here this morning, really fancy a nice brisk walk. Which I can do, now that I have proper, grippy, bootsThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

It was -8.5 on my way into work this morning. The office car park was like a skating rink so my boss has just asked me to order this bulk bag of de-icing salt but does anyone actually know how big these things are? I can't see a size anywhere - unless I'm just been dim. Need to know so I know if we have enough space to store the salt.0

I wonder if that "de-icing salt" contains grit? I'd be tempted to ring them up and ask what the weight is. It might be cheaper to get both salt and grit/sharp sand from somewhere like B&Q. I saw some not that long ago and they would have come in very handy right now but they were much too heavy for one person to carry. I doubt I would have been able to drag them back home in my shopping-trolley, never mind getting them up the three flights of stairs. Just as well that salt is cheap in L!dl.0

The website says " Salt is Brown Rock Salt, which does not have any grit or sand added"
But I have no idea what that means - is that a good thing or a bad thing?0 -
I just got this email back from Hallstone regarding the size of their bulk bags of de-icing salt in case anyone else is interested.
"We don’t advertise a weight as it can vary from bag to bag by a few grams, which has implications relating to Trading Standards. The size of the bag however is a constant 85x85x85cm. This information has now been added to the site. Thank you for bringing in to our attention."0 -

Surely they could put a minimum weight? Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Our local Poundstretcher had a pallet of bags of de-icing salt outside this morning-might be worth checking if you have a branch nearby.0
