The fleece lining for the curtains tip I've read on here sounds fab, and I'm going to give it a go to try and keep some extra warmth in - but I was just wondering whether the really cheap and cheerful simple fleeces work as well or if they can be too thin. Kids ones like this for example http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.211-7650.aspx that tend to be pretty thin. I'd rather spend a few £s extra and get something that will be most effective, but not if I don't need to :)

Phew you were up early ExTrolley101, I'll bet it was cold at that time of the morning!
Does anyone else find this weather really strange? Yesterday we had sunshine but really low temperatures. Too cold to venture out and plant my bargain primulas that I got last week at Lidls:(
We've got rain on freezing ground today, going to take it very carefully when I go out this morning. (Wish I hadn't made that hairdressers appointment) Take care everyone:)

  • I have decided that I am officially stupid! Plodded my way up the road on Sunday to get the papers, got back without having fallen. Yesterday evening I "found" the Yaktrax I had bought and completely forgotten about - how stupid is that?

Well, the weather is forecast to turn again and snow showers are due to come in at around 7pmish this evening. I am working from home tomorrow :T which means that it is only DH that needs to go out to work and he is taking the Land Rover. Think he'll be okay once he gets onto the main road it should, in theory, not be too bad. I go the shopping done yesterday which leaves us with nothing to go out for!

Just a bit concerned about this freezing rain they are forecasting DH has said that if it comes down not only will it wash the salt away but it will freeze on the gorund quickly and cause an ice rink effect! He is not looking forward to tomorrow at all - he is one of the blue light emergency services - and this is going to cause big problems for everyone, fire, amulance, police and emergency hospital staff!!

    Stay safe everyone!

Hi, just stumbled across this thread after searching for reasons why my window would break :o. Am I right in thinking a double glazed window could shatter on the inside due to the temperature? Its only a small downstairs toilet window but it is absolutely freezing in there, the coldest room in the house.

We woke up to one of our double glazed bedroom windows broken on the inside yesterday morning and another one is the same this morning. Window compnay are calling me tomorrow.
I would love to know what the window company say about your damaged windows abwsco. We have covered ours up for now. Just not got the cash to see to it yet. Seems strange that if it is the cold weather that's done it, why hasn't it happened to everyone?!

As promised an update after the engineers visit. It has been caused by the cold temps:( Looking on the www seems to confirm this as well. Waiting for price to come through to have them redone as ours are leaded and were made specially as a copy of the original windows. Also decided to ring our insurance company just to check if it would be covered and the excess. As I was honest when asked when it happened it would be two claims and two excesses:mad: Dread to think what the cost will be so have told DH that as far as I'm concerned we'll just take out the broken glass and have two single glazed windows!!

Morning. Has anyone else woken up to no cold water? Since this is a new house - just moved here last year - I'm not sure what to do or where the frozen pipe is. Its a mains pipe I'm pretty sure. Wish I'd kept the tap running on slow during the night and this might not have happened. Any suggestions welcome.

Have you ring the water board to check there aren't any problems anywhere. Water was off here a few weeks ago due to a massive burst. No idea what to suggest if it's not that though. Hope you're not too long without water.
  • Thanks for that Abwsco. A friend of the family is in the windows business so we're able to get a replacement from him thankfully. If we couldn't get one from him I would be replacing with a single one too.

I thought I had done well getting ready for the cold weather but keep finding new things to sort out for next year. We now have damp patches on an unused chimney breast and in a few rooms you can actually feel the breeze blowing round!

Thannks abwsco - no I hadn't contacted the water board before you said. I did and got a recorded message that there was a problem in my area but since my neighbours aren't experiencing problems I guess its my pipe thats frozen. Neighbour said that if the pipes are plastic there is less chance of a burst occurring so I am hoping that will be the case. I turned off the mains tap and bought some bottled water and get the rest from the neighbours in a bucket! Might pop to the local swimming pool on Monday for a shower if it hasn't thawed by then. Its never happened to me before.
