Wel I got the snow I wanted and beautiful it is too. Unfortunately my boiler decided to pack up so been without heating & hot water since 6pm yesterday...not much fun I can tell you especially with my old bones creaking. Still , I will appreciate it much more when it is back on and no more moaning about the cost of running it !
Hurrah, the man has just arrived to fix it..hopefully.:j

:rotfl: I feel the same about my washing machine (see my earlier posts up this thread!). Its in a brick shed/outhouse just outside my kitchen back door and its a pain in the rear having to go out there all the time with washing but yesterday the machine froze solid and the water pipe burst! I spent half a day sorting it out with the help of a neighbour and I am vowing never to complain about it again! I'm so grateful its fixed!!!
  • Morning snowaholics everywhere, isn't it a nice feeling to be prepared for all this? It is so good to have that knowledge that whatever the weather decides to do next we are snug as bugs and as prepared as we can be. Hope everyone has a good day and stays warm and safe. Cheers Lyn.

Hi, just stumbled across this thread after searching for reasons why my window would break :o. Am I right in thinking a double glazed window could shatter on the inside due to the temperature? Its only a small downstairs toilet window but it is absolutely freezing in there, the coldest room in the house.

And about 5cm of snow has fallen since this morning

I really should have found this thread months ago, we live in such a draughty house!

We woke up to one of our double glazed bedroom windows broken on the inside yesterday morning and another one is the same this morning. Window compnay are calling me tomorrow.

Right, at last it looks as if the winter prep might have been worth it! Snow is due here in about six hours.

Of course, in typical fashion, I'm almost out of milk, so I have to get some this morning, but, much more importantly, I have to buy presents...

    Big news - I'm a Granny. :j:j:j

Molly Maria was born at 10.50 last night. I'm a happy thing today. ;)

Congratulations Granny, wonderful news. Lovely names too. :A

The sky dish packed up last night when the snow was coming down heavy, so I spent about an hour on tinternet and then went to bed, but it was so light still, I laid in bed looking at the snow coming down. I just felt so snug and those flannelette sheets have paid off in dividends as well.

Dogs have really enjoyed the snow today. DH was out with his snow shovel :rotfl:clearing away the drive and paths he was really eager to test drive it. It has sat in the garage a while I thought we would not get round to using it at all :D

Cooked lunch whilst still admiring the white stuff from the kitchen window - boy it does feel good MrsLurcherwalker you are right.

Sky dish is back up and running normally again this morning after a big crow sat on it and shook off much of the snow when it took off :D Snow is thawing out here at the moment, it is an almost balmy 3° degrees at the moment!

We had loads of snow over night and it kept on snowing for most of the morning too! :j. The wind had pushed it all up against the back door and youngest cat went out the cat flap and almost disappeared. Could only get the front door open just enough to squeeze out and my lovely snow shovel did the job of clearing the drive superbly. I dug the garage out too so we can get to wood/coal supplies too.

Went for a lovely walk (wore my bargain sports direct £3.99 snow boots) and was in it up past my knees in some places. Needless to say it took a while to thaw out once we were home. None of it has thawed and I've got a pile of snow around 4ft deep on the drive.....snowman building tomorrow then! I doubt DDs schools will be open, the main road through the village isn't clear so buses haven't run today, with the ice that the morning will bring I doubt they'll get through early.

  • I think we are lucky down here in Hampshire as we had rain last night and not snow although it has been bitterly cold. I saw some Redwings in the garden today which is quite unusual as they are countryside birds and only come into built up areas when they are hungry. When I walked the lurcher this afternoon I noticed that all the Hawthorn and Ivy berries on the walk had been taken so I shall up the frequency of feeding the birds in the garden. I think they are in for lean times .

Thats so nice to see a different flock of birds, from the normal ones you see, we seem to have flocks of long tailed tits since early December here, I made my own bird cakes this morning and they went down a treat with all of the birds today, I keep my used coconut shell bird feeders and fill them with my own bird food once they have eaten it..........Redwings are a beautiful bird so much like the thrush..........

I took my little chihuahua rosie for a walk this morning bearing in mind we had 5 inches of snow in Suffolk overnight , rosie is only 6 inches tall so I had to walk her on the road where car tracks had been cos if id walked her on the pavement it would look like she was in a snow drift...:eek:....Tonight we are in for -4 we had no thaw today cos it didnt rise to 1 degree................Ive been living off the freezer this lately cos I put fair bit of food away before xmas in case we got snowed in so its now being used, so should have cheap shop bill for the next couple of weeks ....:D

Thanks for the replies and the lovely welcome everyone

I would love to know what the window company say about your damaged windows abwsco. We have covered ours up for now. Just not got the cash to see to it yet. Seems strange that if it is the cold weather that's done it, why hasn't it happened to everyone?!

Someone else replied saying it can't be the temperature change (sorry on my phone so can't look back), just interested to know what it could be.

I have done a few things to prepare for the cold. Stocked up on flour to make my own bread, have a little stockpile of basics thanks to my newfound couponning hobby, including longlife milk which was a big mistake (bought sterilised by accident, yuk!)

  • Sterilised milk is just passable in coffee, or even hot chocolate and just use it up in baking ( I had a friend who used to only use it so after trying it in tea and then coffee always had coffee at hers, and hot chocolate on a couple of occasions and it was at least drinkable.

Welcome, no help on the window, only got double glazings ourselves 2 years ago and still learning about them. To my knowledge there is supposed to be a vacumn between the two panes of glass so temp should not affect them if one hot and another cold. Wonder though, have you checked remaining on carefully for even the smallest gaps, if there was one and air got into vacumn then it got really cold so air outside was pulling warmer air out pressure might have built up on inside pane and caused it to break - now a long, long time since I did chemistry so not sure if I have got things right or explained it properly - I know there are some great scientists on MSE, just not sure if on this thread, if they are am sure they will be happy to correct me. Its something to do with warm air pushes and cold air pulls, vague, vague memories of chemistry.
