We usually take our decorations down by 31st December. I say decorations, but we only have a tree up! The only other 'decoration' we usually have is christmas cards. I got some card hangers which are strips of velcro, and sticky-backed velcro attaches the cards to it. I used the same sticky backed velcro as last year, so it wasn't as sticky - the cards fell off after a day or two and we didn't bother putting them back up so they've been in a pile on top of a bookcase.

I am bah humbug as I hate all the hype and fuss over what is just one day. I'd happily put the tree up on christmas eve and take it down on boxing day if it was up to me, but the children like to put it up on DH's birthday which is the 6th December. I'd not bother at all if it wasn't for the children!

Wreath goes up on the front door round about the middle of December. Tree and a few other little decorations go up on Solstice night. Cards stay in a tidy pile somewhere.

The house is completely cleared of decorations by New Year's Eve.

It's worked fine like this for several years, and two weeks worth of visible Christmas stuff seems plenty to me! It also gives a sense of something to look forward to which has a beginning, a middle and an end with a fresh start for the new year. I like that!

i wouldn't mind taking mine down just so i can have more space to dry the washing and get my extension cord back so i can move the microwave to it's normal and more accessible position, however my 10 year old daughter would not be best pleased.

guess it can wait til a few days into january. i don't want to push with her this year as she said to me on christmas eve as i was tucking her into bed the second time :p 'mum, santa isn't real is he?' she put on a brave face and said she enjoyed pretending he's real and all that and i suspected she really knew last year at least but i don't want to rush anything this year as it's still hard to openly admit that, open admittance means the true feeling of loss can hit her. she seemed ok but again, best not to push it.

i did promise her that she'd still get stockings and we'd still do our normal christmas stuff so i'm hoping she's alright but in light of this fact i'll wait for another week or so. but if i'm being perfectly honest, i wish i could do it today just cuz i need my space back :rotfl:

I'd love to take my decorations down but DH always insists on leaving them up until the 6th.He also insisted on buying an enormous plastic tree which is far too big for our sitting room.

Took our decs and tree down yesterday. Feels nice and clean for the new year. The weather today is horrible, rainy and cold so went to Dunelm Mill for the sale and bought a pair of 90 x 90 curtains for £42, which we thought was pretty reasonable. Snuggling up with my new kindle and two tired dachshunds now we're home, so nice and warm!

I still haven't braved the rain to go out and cut my curtain poles to length, so the curtains in the study aren't up yet (they're just hung over the supports... the colour is perfect, I know they fit and they are lovely and cosy as they've been interlined). I also need to get some hooks for the tie-backs, as they're so thick they'll need them. And I have to make the tie-backs sometime... or persuade my mum to do them for me :p
