Got one of the as*a snow shovels today, along with a big bag of their salt and an extending car brush/ice scraper/windscreen clearer. Just need to unearth a lidded box big enough to put the salt in to make it easier to use.
Have lit the fire a few times now but still haven't put the heating on. Did have the boiler serviced tho so it's all ready to go. Was very chilly the other day but once the slow cooker had built up some heat it really took the chill off the kitchen......the resulting veggie stew and dumplings was gorgeous too!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. They sound like a solution for our problem: we have an arctic wind that blows through our hall. We've got a porch with the front door on the outside and two glass, internal doors on the inside opening into the hall. The porch isn't heated and the front-door wall is little more than glass and uninsulated timber. Last year, DH purchased sticky-backed foam draught excluder to line the main doorway but, in places, it was too thick and the front door wouldn't close. I've made a draught snake ("Cuthbert") who lies across the porch in front of the inner doors but he only has a partial effect on the draught. As a temporary solution, we place a rolled up rug across the bottom of the inner doors on the hall-side, but that's only good if someone is home since you can't put it back when you leave. The rug works much better than Cuthbert. (I think I made him too long.)
I'm seriously considering installing a door curtain to sit behind the inner doors but we still need something to more permanent for the draught.

I bought one last week, stupidly not realising that it was for an internal door & I need an external one. I am quite happy to send it to you if you pm details. It will only sit at home gathering dust otherwiseA smile costs little but creates much0 -
I have a cat flap which the cats broke so now it's just a hole in the door, not being very well off I decided to put a curtain wire at the top of the door and hang an old duvet on it which covers my glass window, draughty letter box and the hole in the door. I live in an upstairs flat and I noticed how draughty it was at times so I pinned some old cushions inside the duvet at the bottom,it works as a draught excluder and gives the curtain some ballast as well. You can't see them from outside. It seems to work as my flat feels warmer and the postie can still deliver,no more nosey people looking in my door and the cats can come and go as they like!
Now tell me I am daft!0 -
I have been having a mooch about on the internet checking for snow conditions and it all seems to be gales and heavy rain for the next couple of weeks. No sign yet of the white stuff at all.
I am wondering if it will put in an appearance this year at all? Some were saying it could be as early as this week, but nothing at all has come of that.
Clocks go back this weekendhow I flipping loathe it

 Please don't say that!!! My friends already think I am crackers with all my FB posts about winter preps - they will laugh at me big time if we get no snow :rotfl:
I am not looking forward to clocks going back either... Time to start using the dawn simulation light and i'm going to make it my winter mission to get to bed by 10 latest every night and semi-hibernate. I am normally a night owl and rarely go to bed before 11.30 and often later.
I am of to A*da later once the traffic dies down - Its a bit of a drive so we rarely go but I fancy a mooch round to see what winter bargains I can pick up
I am currently on hold to the damn gas company as my stupid card meter is coming up with a "battery FAIL" message  I am livid. i didnt ever want a card meter put in here (one of my previous tenants did it without my knowledge and they won't change it back without me paying £50 ). I started the call before I started this post and I am up to 10 mins on hold now
I am going to demand they change my meter back to a regular DD payments one or I will go to another supplier - must admit, I should really do some calculations to see if another company will be cheaper but I cba - hate doing stuff like that
I am a wee bit sick of the message "thank you for your patience, your call will be answered ASAP"
WHAT PATIENCE????? My patience ran out at 2 minutes.
Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy they answered!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
Mountain Warehouse have a 20% discount code usable online or in store, FGH20 which applies to all stock including items already on offer.
I went into the local branch and bought snow boots which were originally £49.99, reduced to £29.99, with discount were a further 20% off. Very happy with them.If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Re my previous post - Gas company were a PITA so I am going to get their engineer out to change the battery and then change companies to one that will remove the card meter :mad:0

I bought a pair on the £22.50 offer, and must say that I am not impressed with them.
As suggested by another user on this thread, I thought I'd wear mine yesterday to wear them in a bit and get used to them before I really need them for the cold weather / snow. Well .... after 4 hours of wear I had large blisters on the bottom of my feet  They may be waterproof and faux fur lined for warmth, but the makers seem to have forgotten to put some padding for the feet in underneath the fur
As I've worn them already I can't return them. However, they definitely need some insoles to stop the return of the blistersSmiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
