Web browser - but I suddenly find it's giving me The Great British Bake-off on i-player, which initiated this nightmare yesterday[was it only yesterday? Istayed up till 4-ish this a.m. trying to sort and fix.]

    p.s. your siggy's rather splendid.

There's a sort of blotchiness to the typography - any idea why?
Also, even the little ikons along the bottom right hand side are bigger than they were - it doesn't look particularly neat and tidy.
I'd like the clear strong type I had previously.

Are you using a router or a usb modem?

Do a system restore to when it was working - system restore has nothing to do with defrag (defrag won't make any difference either way).

Are you saying nothing works, no internet, no programs? and these messages come up repeatedly or when you launch something particular?

1] Large one asks if I'd like windows to find how/where it was created and re-do. When I opt for this, nothing happens.
2]Shorter msg reads:[with X inside a red circle]'Unable to find locale[yes, it does have an 'e' on the end]data files.

Set your homepage to google, uninstall all those toolbars, who is your isp?

link to free avast is on the right hand side of this page

I'm sorry, i do not know how to answer this.

re:Set your homepage to google, uninstall all those toolbars, who is your isp?

a[it seems stuck on google chrome[that motif is on a number of my desktop ikons, [just as the opera one was when i was trying the Speed Up Your Computer process last night.] not the ordinary google I previously used - I dislike this. The previous google toolbar sat below the Internet Explorer toolbar.

b]one reason being my normal headings and toolbars are all gone. I now have no toolbars at all.

c]if isp means to whom do i pay the bills, it is Primus/Planet Talk .

I have already gone back to Tuesday midnight, but my normal page has not returned. I'll try again.

Yes, my internet is working. Those msgs seemed to come up when i was trying to find things in my usual way and click my desktop ikons.

There are now 2 folder headings at top of screen all the time, which have entitled themselves[Ididn't do it]Imported from IE and Imported from IE[1].

I have tried to re-install Internet Explorer, but don't know which things to select and download.

having trouble understanding what the problem is.

post a fresh hijackthis log if you want help with the speed.

if things aren't right with chrome, reinstall it - but it will use more ram than ie

router/modem - is the box between pc and the net.

I suspect it a mixture of those Toolbars and malware.

    Needs a bit of a clean-up.

sounds almost like the screen resolution and colour settings have been changed....right-click on an empty bit of desktop, select Properties, Settings tab, and increase the screen resolution a little bit, and make sure the colour is set to highest.

...as well as a probable malware infection :(

There also appears to be an awful lot running at startup.
