I'd debate your interpretation of being 'caught' pregnant, it's not the flu...

Now getting back to the actual topic, why can't she live at home to save up?

I would say caught as she had the coil fitted at still got caught.

Because home is not big enough thats why.

and what can she save, she doesnt receive any money at all.

Yes herein lies the problem, hence the suggestion of paid employment for both her and her partner. Desperate times call for desperate measures, perhaps a sofa would do or putting the career aspirations on hold to allow her to provide for her child right now.

She is doing a foundation degree in primary teaching and learning i think its called. Its higher level course

If she is doing a foundation degree in primary teaching - full time course then she cannot claim jobseekers or income support....

However she can claim students maintenance grant, students loan, adult dependants grant since he doesn't work, grant for having children (parents something or other check the students pages), childcare grant if she needs childcare, child tax credits, council tax rebate, housing benefit, as well as applying to her college (where she is taking the foundation degree) for a hardship bursary. There is a huge amount of financial assistance still available to adults who are students who also have children.

Most things she has will be put on ebay over the next couple of days. SHe wants to manage this situation herself but i cant see how they will do it.

My daughter is currently doing a college course to be a teachers assistant, be a shame to waste that

    Which is it?

If it's a TA course, it's only a couple of hours in college and 2 days placement, so plenty of time to do a part time job too.

If it's a degree then how was she managing to claim IS?
Moving onto a better place...Ciao

I was just going to say this. Alarm bells are sounding if she's doing a Foundation Degree full time as her student funding package would be taken into account for means tested benefits and some of them wouldn't be payable.

Sadly it's a bit late in the day to be prioritising your granddaughter. If the plan is to keep her settled then contingency money needs to be put aside to ensure that is so. This hasn't been done so unfortunately alternative plans need to take priority, ie any roof, not the one she likes best.

You are not seriously suggesting it would be a good idea for someone to give us a housing association house, which are like gold dust where I live, for the sake of a short period of no income??

Surely she would have to give a Month's notice anyway, in which time it could all be sorted. JSA upto 4 weeks and Tax Credit upto 8 weeks, might only take 2 or 3.

OP if I was your daughter I wouldnt worry about rent or council tax as this will be sorted in time, maybe you could help by supplying small food parcels? Bread, Milk, Eggs, some bits for the freezer, big bag of spuds, bag of pasta, so they won't starve. Apply for a crisis loan to pay the gas and electric cards and just tell her not to worry, it's very stressful when you have no money, I have been there many times but when you really have to it is possible to survive on no money for a short period.
  • Some of these comments are just horrible, yes they could of saved up some money before he moved in but most of us dont have any money to save, and the getting a job line, how do you know if they have been looking or not, it isnt easy finding a job at the moment.

All i can advise is trying to get a crisis loan to give your daughter a little money until her benefits are sorted, good luck.
    Is a Bipolar bear :p

:eek:Rent and council tax are priority bills; far more important than paying for utilities!

Absolutely, reduce outoings and increase incomings as much as possible for 6 months then try again at living independently.

You are not seriously suggesting she ought to ignore paying rent and tax?

    Please help.

My daughters boyfriend moved into her house yesterday.

Today she had notified the housing association and also rang the benefits helpline and tax credits.

He doesnt work neither does she at the moment 4 year old child at home.

    Any how

Benefits helpline immediately stopped her income support, said she wont get this again. OK

Tax credits stopped the claim and said need to put in a new claim jointly. OK

Housing benefit and council tax benefit stopped her claim. Has got the reclaim together OK

Now thats all fine, she is doing the right thing by being honest etc.

So now he has got to make a joint claim for JSA. this can take 4 weeks he was told today.

    Taxcredits can take 8 weeks.

How is she ment to survive for this long without any money for food, gas or electric on prepayment meters.

Any help please would be appreciated.

I was listening to radio 4 a few weeks ago and apparently if you are in dire circumstances and make this known at the Job centre they can refer you to a charity who can provide you with essential items like food etc.
