Benefits and new partner

Please help.

My daughters boyfriend moved into her house yesterday.

Today she had notified the housing association and also rang the benefits helpline and tax credits.

He doesnt work neither does she at the moment 4 year old child at home.

Any how

Benefits helpline immediately stopped her income support, said she wont get this again. OK

Tax credits stopped the claim and said need to put in a new claim jointly. OK

Housing benefit and council tax benefit stopped her claim. Has got the reclaim together OK

Now thats all fine, she is doing the right thing by being honest etc.

So now he has got to make a joint claim for JSA. this can take 4 weeks he was told today.

Taxcredits can take 8 weeks.

How is she ment to survive for this long without any money for food, gas or electric on prepayment meters.

Any help please would be appreciated.

Why didn't they try to save a bit before moving in together?
  • 2 options (apart from the above)

    1, he get a job

2, they move in with you or you loan them money

sorry it doesn't sound helpful but have they helped themselves?

He was living with a friend and the friend has given up his flat and gone back to his parents, He didnt tell My daughters partner until the day before. So they was sort of forced to rush into it.

3rd Option - They both get jobs? Kid'll be in school soon so a bit of part time nursery would perhaps be good for him to ease the transition.

He is searching everywhere for a job.

It is my grandaughters home and she is settled there. Seems a bit silly to give up a home.

Yes i obviously wont let them starve.

But how do people manage that have no one to help financially

Most things she has will be put on ebay over the next couple of days. SHe wants to manage this situation herself but i cant see how they will do it.

My daughter is currently doing a college course to be a teachers assistant, be a shame to waste that

Why not, being a TA is pretty limiting as far as careers go. To go any further it'll be 4 years off back at uni or yonks with the OU.

Besides which, now they can split child care and both work part time.

Makes me a bit angry, actually. You get so many threads on here where people go "do we have to tell anyone that my partner's moved in" and everyone always says "yes, otherwise you're claiming too much benefit, rar rar rar". Here you've got someone who's doing the right thing and it just shows how broken the system is - why should she not receive *anything* whilst the amounts are adjusted. It does nothing to encourage honesty. Really disappointing.
