Same here. I wouldn't even think about leaving it a couple of days, let alone YEARS! Makes me feel ill :o

I have a lot of very thick wavy hair and I need to wash them every day or I have a greasy head of hair which I hate. I also have greasy skin, but I don't care, I've been told that greasy faces are less likely to show wrinkles, and indeed, I am pretty lucky that end!

We all wash our hair every day. Three of us have very short hair (me, mrsLA and DS1) and DS2 has very long hair.

I'm surprised the other way round - that people do wash it daily!

  • I don't agree that washing your hair less often makes it less greasy because mine needs doing every day but it's such a hassle (waist length) that I actually wash it every 2-3 days and just suffer it. I can only wear my hair down on the day I wash it, after that it is stuck to my head with grease and when I brush it back it stays there. If I leave it 5 days the grease is down to my shoulders, disgusting but true.
  • I wash mine every fortnight. It is knee length and I detest having wet hair. I do think it gets less greasy the less you wash it because I used to wash it twice a week and the greasiness level at washing time is the same. My housemates obviously know I only do it rarely and they comment how clean it still looks after a week and how it doesn't smell bad (which surprised them). And they are brutally honest people :-p

My hair is just past my shoulders, blonde and fine which looks greasy unless I've just washed it. I have tried going a few days before washing it but it's disgusting and I can't stand how it feels.

I think my problem is that I have naturally oily skin - which means my scalp is oily too. Every morning, without fail, my hair is oily and sometimes it clumps in sections. I agree that for some people, washing twice a week is ideal for their hair, but if you have an issue with oily/greasy hair, that option just won't work for you.

I always wash my hair of a morning in the shower, usually every other day as I have baths in between. I find that running my fingernails over my scalp can help when washing as the oil (called sebum) builds up and a soft lather won't get it off. If I need to dry quickly, I try to avoid using a hot hairdryer and usually hold the cold button on it. I keep the window open in the bedroom to try and keep cool as I find my hair/scalp doesn't get greasy that way.

I use shampoos for oily/greasy hair, usually whatever is on offer. L'oreal did one called Intensive Greasy that was great but I haven't seen it in stores for a while.

I use Neutrogena (it's a grapefruit scrub) on my face when I shower/bath to try and cut down on any oil touching my hair. Another good tip is to avoid running your fingers through your hair when it's down, it helps add more oil to the hair from the scalp. I've also found that keeping my hairbrush clean everyday helps, otherwise the oil sticks to it and gets transferred back to the hair.

ETA: Using shampoos that have moisturiser in are the worst for me, like Dove, it intensifies the oil.

I wash my hair every other day. The third day it looks awful. If however I do leave it go a third day, maybe if I'm camping or ill, I find the next time that it looks ok on the third day.

My mum used to insist we only washed our hair once a week and although I instantly rebelled against this, I think there was some truth in what she said.

I wash mine every day most of the time, sometimes I'll skip a day at the weekend if I'm not going out. I have lots and lots of long, wavy hair that turns into a tangled mess overnight. The only way I can run a brush through it is if I've washed and conditioned it.
Also, if I leave it 2 days without washing, my scalp becomes terribly itchy - any longer and it's unbearable! I don't know why, it's always been that way.
  • Once a week usually, though I'll wash it extra if I'm going out. Occasionally a wear synthetic dreads in my hair and I never wash it with them in. After 2-3 months the dreads come out and my hair is in the best condition ever. I tend to wear it down two days and tie it back for the other 5.
