How often do you wash your hair?

I have really fine hair, and find that I can have a bath at night, wash hair, and yet still wake up to a greasy spoon hair do! I hate it!

I've tried using just shampoo, and conditioner only for the ends (long hair - no difference!

I don't have a shower atm - in the past I have found the shower helps cut down on the greasiness as it is all rinsed away - baths are rubbish if they are your only option!

I'm not particularly crazy about personal hygiene, but I do like to bathe at least once every 24 hrs - therefore it f**ks me off to be greasyhaircentral.com at 9am, when I just had a bath at 8pm the night before - grrr!

  • About twice a week. I have very, very fine fair hair, and washing it too much makes it dry and fly-away. What shampoo do you use?

Head & Shoulders - No offence meant, but I wish mine was fine, dry and fly away - greasy hair looks bad at the best of times - fine greasy hair tends to make you look like you haven't washed for 3 days, 5 mins after stepping out the bath!

    Aghhh I hate it!

OK, you don't have a shower, but are you washing and rinsing your hair in your bathwater? If you are, that probably isn't getting your hair properly clean.

I don't know if they still do those 'shower' attachments that you fit to the bath taps. If they do, then that might be an option for washing your hair.

If they don't, then maybe the even more old-fashioned way of having a basin of clean water and a jug to hand, and using them to rinse your hair thoroughly, is the way to go.

However, if you're washing and rinsing your hair in clean water, but it's still getting greasy after 13 hours, are you over-washing it, so that it's over-producing oil?

If all else fails, and you simply have hair which gets greasy after 13 hours, maybe you should wash it in the morning rather than at night?

That's what I do - with my fine, greasy hair.

    This exactly!

You are over washing your hair and it is producing ore oil as you have stripped it all out by washing it.

There is NO need to wash your hair that often (unless you have a REALLY disgusting job that gets stuff in your hair!)

If you need to wash it every day then try paul mitchells every day shampoo - its not as harsh as other shampoo's - or try treseme natural shampoo as it doesnt contain sulper - although these can be expensive.

If you can manage - try washing your hair every other day and use dry shampoo on the other days http://www.batistehair.co.uk - you can buy it in boots, tesco's asda etc - costs around £1.99

What i do is style my hair (I straighten mine) then spray the dry shampoo on it (like hairspray) leave it for a few minutes then rub my hair like im washing it! it collects all the grease and falls off. Try hanging your head upside down so the dry shampoo doesnt go on your clothes and remember to wash your hands after!!! Brush you hair when you've done to get the nugs out (your hair brush might even collect more dry shampoo) then away you go.

Talc also does the same as dry shampoo if you have light coloured hair - i REALLY wouldnt recommend talc with brunette hair though! It's a nightmare trying to get all the talc out (never had the issue with dry shampoo!)

    HTH!

Every coupe of days. I have fine hair but I can style it better when it hasn't just been washed.
I know hairdressers told my daughter to not wash her hair the day of her prom as her hair would hold better.

  • Twice a week for me but I have a massive thick mop and of I washed more often it would dry out too much and I'd be forever trying to style it... I have better things to do with my time!

I wash my hair every day but could probably get away with washing it every 2nd day. Blonde hair seems to show the 'greasiness' more than dark hair, as the roots look darker than the ends if it needs washing.

As another poster suggested, make sure you rinse with clean water (not bath water) and try changing shampoo. I was using one of those organic camomile shampoos and found that it left my hair looking really greasy so I changed back to the Tresseme one I had before.

Another thing I recommend is Pantene Clarifying shampoo (not the ordinary Pantene), - it gets hair nice and clean if you've got 'build-up' or residue :)

Does anyone remember that program on tv where they tested the theory that you never need to wash your hair?
It produces it's own cleaning oils and when you wash your hair, it gets rid of these oils. I think the models trying it, found it took 8 weeks for their hair to settle down.

It's not the same as a woman and I don't have that much hair left anyway :D, but I haven't washed mine for over 5 years, unless it gets really dirty somehow. A quick wetting and a towelling does the job for me. I found the same, it took a few weeks to settle down.

Does your scalp not smell a bit? I find that if daughter doesn't wash her hair every day, her scalp smells. She obviously doesn't smell it and neither does anyone else from a distance, but Mums tend to go smell things other people wouldn't, hence me putting my nose on her head. :D

Please note: I wouldn't put my nose on anyone else's head so I wouldn't get a smell from anyone else's scalp. :D
