Me too, it sounds a good scheme. :)

I wondered if that would help your situation too Looby, maybe not immediately but in the next 6-12 months as your DS becomes of an age to let himself in with a door key and starts at Secondary school?
its certainly something I'll be looking into, it would help me be able to apply for jobs in a much wider area than I can now.

Jobcarz looks like a superb idea. Pity we have nothing like it down South here in Essex.

OP, good luck with your new job. Hopefully 6 months will become permanent. I'm still reeling from not getting a permanent contract, but an extension until the end of the year instead.

A lot of the frustration that arises from some posters is the feeling that some posters give up on a job prospect before having even tried to figure out a solution to whatever problem they encounter.

OP has been out of employment for 7 months, so being offered a full-time job at a good pay is a chance that can't just been thrown away unless it is an absolute last resort.

So far, there is no indication that OP has come close to reaching last resort. Has he/she spoken to the employer to find out about arrangements, car share, possibilities to stay a bit later and take first bus back home etc.. Has he/she approached all his/her friends/family to see if they could help with the money, they might not be able to do individually but how about all together? Early birthday/chritmas present? And if they have to cycle for a couple of weeks, whilst paying only for the absolute essentials to be able to save every penny as quickly as possible to get a car, surely that is a better alternative long term than remaining on JSA until the perfect job comes.

And if does come down to this, maybe the OP can start to save every penny out of their JSA to be able to buy a car as soon as possible so that if another similar job happens to come again, they then will be ready to take it...

Save EVERY penny out of their JSA? My God what an idiotic suggestion. So how he supposed to buy food or pay the phone bill.
And before anyone says that a phone is a luxury its how some employers will contact him so he needs a phone. He also needs to eat. What really sticks out to me on this thread is that the posters coming up with these suggestions, you know damn well they wouldnt do it themselves.

except the OP came back a couple of days ago detailing what steps he's taken, some of them directly from the advice he got on this thread and that he's adamant to get to this job so has no intention on staying on JSA long term.

To be fair, if he'd come back a bit earlier we wouldn't have kept banging out the same inappropriate suggestions. We didn't know his situation because he hadn't told us everything.

Now that we know he does have a partner and doesn't live with his parents I am happy to retract my idea of him relocating, as it would not be practical.

As for the assumption that he was trying to avoid taking the job, you have to admit that his thread title wasn't exactly "please help, desperate to take a job but travel problems".
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

13 miles walking would take you 4 hrs 20 minutes boy thats a llong walk you need to find someone who could perhaps give you a lift home

plus its illegal to wlak along the motorway

Plus it's not within reasonable travelling times as the jobcentre set out in their terms.

All the idiots criticising here seem to miss the obvious will to make this job work and the sad lack of means to do so.

No-one here is in the OP's position I think. I have been, I was offered a job which I couldn't get to without wheels wwhich I didn't have. Not far away in theory, in practice...no chance. I rang the place to ask about the chances of a lift, sharing costs...when they said not likely I said maybe I could cycle half jokingly and they said that wouldn't work for them as it wasn't going to be anywhere near reliable or safe in winter or dark mornings as we had at the time.

The Jobcentre can't force you to take stupid jobs, there is a time limit within which it's reasonable, it's common sense too. The cost side of it can be mitigated sometimes with a job grant until you get paid, but it's not going to cover buying and insuring etc of a car. I'm not sure you've been unemployed long enough, but a budgeting loan could maybe help if you could add it to a job grant? Budgeting loans cover starting work costs, and you don't usually need to tell them exact use anyway. My mate got one to help him in a similar situation, but he needed tools for work. I think he got £300 as a single guy, but if you're not single it's more than that you can apply for.

I feel for you OP, i would go back to the J/c and make them help you or leave you alone. They aren't abiding by their own rules. What does your jobseeker's agreement say as far as travel is concerned BTW? It's usually in there...just dug out my old one and it says an hour each way travel in black and white.

Mine says up to 90 minutes each way by scheduled public transport. Which excludes virtually any job outside of town (walking distance).

Don't be silly, this is MSE. Simple advice (without opinion) is not allowed round these parts. :D
