"The kid" is 24 and was working until 7 months ago. I'll concede your better knowledge on the NE housing situation, but does NO-ONE offer their spare room out these days? Shame if not, there's good money to be made!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Just to clarify, I'm not the one who suggested he bikes (the Norman Tebbit comment was for illustration of attitude not practical comparison). I agree it wouldn't be possible, especially since the OP says it is partly along a motorway.
If he's working six days a week as implied in his first post, it isn't going to be a 12-hour shift is it?
I think his best bet is to approach Nissan with his concerns and ask if there is any chance he could be put onto a different shift during public transport operating times. But if that's a flat NO then I still go with exploring other options, however "Daily Mail"ish before deciding to stay on the dole for another few months.
I'm wondering whether he lives in a very rural area, in which case possibly any realistic job opportunity is going to involve travel complications. Very many jobs are not 9-5 these days.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Kid is a term of affection around here, like lad or bloke, no offence meant by it.If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0 -

Ah, council estates. You mean those places full of houses allegedly inhabited by one old dear in a 3-bed house she won't give up because she brought her family up in it?
Just sayin' ....

If he lives 13 miles from the factory that puts him either in North Tyneside or the coalfields of east Durham, The public transport up here is brilliant, I live in the coalfields and can get buses to Sunderland and Newcastle and back every 10 minutes, but these finish about 11.30pm then you're !!!!!!edIf at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0 -
Setting aside all the absolutely senseless b!tching and sniping, several good suggestions have been made as to what might be an acceptable solution to the OP's problem.
Only the OP can decide which one of them works best for him and his personal circumstances.0 -

If the former it would be an ideal opportunity to spread his wings a bit before he gets into the living-at-home-forever rut that seems to prevail these days.
.
i relocated 35 miles away but only after i'd been at the job for over 12 months. The OP hasn't even started and you're wanting him to re-locate; he might not like it or get sacked and then he's lumbered in a new place 13 miles from everybody.0 -
