So I could try the Coke to get rid of the lime scale and then keep it clean with the 28p stuff !!!

    Thank you all so much.

Off to buy 25p bottles of coke tomorrow to clean the loo !!

Do be aware that using cola too frequently can cause staining of your toilet! Cola has a caramel colouring in it which will eventually stain!!
The idea of using cola stems from using up cola that has gone flat rather than throw it out!

You can buy cheap bottles of thin bleach that will do the job just as effectively.

You can empty the water from the toilet (push the loo brush in and out of the U-bed and it will push through most of the water) and then clean any limescale with some bicarb and vinegar made into a paste.

I remember years ago, my nana used to swear by putting stewed ruhbarb down mucky toilets to clean them it used to work too as far as I can remember, its not in season at the moment, but then again, who would want to waste ruhbarb putting it down the loo? I love the stuff. Brings the pans out nice and clean when you cook it too.

A full bottle and I don't know if it matter sif it's full sugar or not but I would guess at full sugar

I've never used cola to clean the toilet myself but I think it wouldn't matter whether its full sugar or diet stuff as I think it is the phosphoric acid in cola that has the cleaning action.

I've had a look through and am for once excited about cleaning! and doing the store cupboard challenge!

Back to the point though.., I have recently moved home and the toilet is disgusting! I have tried 'Kaboom' and lots of other branded cleaners but nothing seems to work

Has anyone got any useful ideas or tips please...?

  • Hello - welcome to MSE. It's really worth getting Tesco toilet limescale cleaner. It comes in a blue bottle and costs about 79 pence. It is a strong chemical (which a lot of people dislike) but has been known to clean toilets which people were ready to throw out!!! (including my sisters!!!) It is also quick and easy to use. (Make sure you push as much water round the U-bend as possible with a loo brush first and try to leave the cleaner overnight if possible. I really recommend this stuff. If you want something really old style and chemical free you could try cleaning it with a pumice stone (seriously) but I would go for the easy option every time.
Whatever you choose - good luck and happy money-saving!!

Please help me to sort out my toilet it is absolutely disgusting and my son will be having a party _party_ at home soon so it needs sorting!

Around the flush handle is some sort of white stuff which I have assumed is limescale. So far I have tried wrapping a cloth around it which I soaked in vinegar but this had no effect at all.:wall:

The pipe which brings the water in to flush is made of copper(?) and this has now discoloured to a grungy green colour:eek:

Is there anything I can do? Besides replacing the whole toilet.

Any ideas will be more than welcome
  • Coke (as in coca cola etc) is supposed to be good at shifting limescale.
