Although I have the opportunity to rebuild my work laptop to vista ( its on our select agreement ) , my colleagues experiences with it have been less than positive.

I know its been a pretty much ground-upwards rebuild , but in terms of actual use , I'm happy with XP for now , until things force me to use something else.

  • I have Windows Server 2003 on my laptop. Rock solid. So much better than crappy XP. No doubt vista is a far cry from the stability of 2003. I have always found 2000 SP4 to be the most stable windows ever written, but server 2003 SP1 exceeds this when optimised and comfigured for application performance rather then background processes.

I had a one hour presentation on Vista today from a Microsoft rep.

It appears to have x2 major differences "Aero Graphics" now when I alt and tab it takes twice as long as I have to cycle through a fancy menu.

Search built in EVERYWHERE! I'm talking start menu, windows explorer I think their going to bring out a mouse with a search box in it :p - Think Win XP "F3" function key is quicker.

If a microsoft rep can't convince me I think many customers will carry on getting the brunt end of the stick on Vista! :rotfl:

Hmmm, you seem to have you mind set regardless (even from the first post). And it seems, without having used it properly, or listening to some of the advice on here.

The Atl-Tab feature is a huge benefit. The current one is very tricky to tell what is what when you have a lot of applications open, not very user friendly. It's not as nice as the Beryl (Linux version) top right screen view, but I still found it to be much more usable.

The search too is another good benefit. They're trying to take the "everything is searchable" view like Google. It does make finding things so much easier, and you can search for virtually anything, anywhere.

If Vista isn't worth the cost, and for many people, initially it won't be, then wait a year or two before buying it. It's not an inferior OS though. It may be heavier, and use more resources, have a better GUI, but you should expect it to. It's only taking advantage of the processing power available to it. Even Linux is doing the same (albeit more efficiently). It's a natural progression in technology and something that has been happening to OS's since they first evolved.

Vista's main strength is the way in which the users are managed. XP is by design flawed, or at least most people use it in that way. Vista corrects this, and takes an approach very similar to Linux. Where they let themselves down was abandoning WinFS, not forcing signed drivers, not making it purely 64-bit, and putting DRM into it.

The basic version was/is £60 on HotUkDeals, and the Ultimate £113, which are both very good prices. I know they're OEM versions, but those prices are a lot more feasible for a lot of people.

after seeing these screenshots of crysis looks like I'll have to upgrade, as long as the wife doesn't find out ;)
  • I have never found a valid reason why the majority of people would bother with Vista. It seems to be a REALLY bad idea. At the end of the day, an operating system like Windows is only there so that you can run proper programs on it! It's a bit like petrol or diesel for a car - it won't run without it, but isn't much use on its own! Indeed, why the hell people use ANY Microsoft application is beyond me - that's why there are so many other software companies out there.

A few examples ... for audio playback Winamp, for video playback Power DVD, for web browsing Firefox or Opera, for e-mail Eudora, for video editing Pinnacle or Ulead, for audio editing Cool Edit Pro, for picture editing Coral, for office applications Open Office, the list is endless.

I use Windows 2000 for most things as it is the most stable OS out there at the moment, but some software won't run on it (ie. Avid) so I have it dual booting with XP, but I still can't see any need in the next couple of years for Vista. Also be very afraid of "Secure Computing" - the last nail in the coffin for end user rights on your own PC!

Oh, and a final note, games are not meant to be run on computers .... that's what games consoles are for!! And they are considerably cheaper too.

Hmm, could you tell me which console I can play Civilization and the Total War series on please?

Seriously, if either are available for a console I would like to know. Although i think a mouse and keyboard are probably better for controlling games like that.

I agree that W2k is very stable but I've never had any real problems with XP either, both my home PC and my work Laptop run on XP and I've never had a BSOD on either.

From what I've read about Vista it's got some nice features in it, Improved security for one and some good parental controls, improved search, aero glass GUI.

I have to smile, people rave about the better security and fancy GUIs in OSX and Linux, then when Microsoft launch a new OS with similar features they get slagged off for it!
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
