I'm amazed at how negative some people are, no-one actually knows whether Vista will be buggy or have lots of security holes. I'll just keep my PC firewalled (which I do with any OS), take regular backups and keep my Anti Virus and Anti Spyware up to date and see how I get on with it.

Well lots of people do know how buggy it is as it has been available for professionals for a period of time as have the release candidates and betas before that.

M$ claim to have implemented features to stop remote code exploits and there has already been proof that this isn't accurate and people have found remote code exploits within Vista.

If I didn't get it free (and that legitimate), then I'd wait at least a year before getting it.

Well at least until SP1 and any drivers I may need are more likely to be on the market.

Why did anyone buy windows xp when it first came out.....

Because XP was a _huge_ step up over Windows 98. Vista is the Windows ME of the 21st century; just like the previous version except with a few bells and whistles and more annoying 'features' that the users didn't want.

No-one in their right mind will use Vista before SP1 is released, unless they have to (e.g. if they're going to have to write programs for it, or it comes installed on their new PC).

Beta's are always going to be buggy. Release candidates less so, but from my experience of both it was fine. Very stable in fact.

I can't say with regards to the final finished version though, I've not yet had a chance to use it. If it's any less stable than XP I'd be surprised. I think a lot of people are either jumping on the bandwagon, or getting overly paranoid from articles/threads they've read online.

Hi I stopped using Windows on my comp 8 months ago. I now use Ubuntu Edgy and find I can do anything I want. Besides games--I use a PS2 for that. I have another 3 comps running on XP and they will go over to Linux when Microsoft no longer support them. I can't/won't pay that sort of money.
Ditto, the only reason I stick with XP is the Sage accounts and my HP scanner won't work with sane(yet). Ubunto loads in seconds, updates all the programs together as they become available. You don't have to go round like you do with XP periodically checking if its the latest version. No real worries with adware, spyware and virusses(Virii??)

Yup, totally different experience. Only annoyances for me are:

    1) Games (although have got World Of WarCraft working with Wine)
    2) No AutoGK :(
    3) No EAC (running under Wine)
    4) No DVD Decrypter (running under Wine)
    5) Visual Studio.Net and .Net Framework (running XP via VMWare)
    6) Still yet to get my Freecom DVB-T working with MythTv.
    7) Temperature monitoring tools. Still nothing as good as Intel TAT, and Core Temp (although I think there may be a Linux version somewhere).

The only thing I'm struggling with is buying suitable hardware. It's not quite like Windows where I can buy virtually anything and it'll work, have to be much more selective. Wish I'd got an nVidia card!

Oh, and wireless support is still very poor in Linux in my opinion. Needs to be a lot more simple to do especially as Linux can be heavily dependent upon an internet connection.

HO HUM... another one of these threads... Allthough this one seems a lot more civilised and informative than the usuall "it will need a pentium 9 8.7Ghz cpu and 25GB ram to work" stuff that usually gets posted... Anyway heres the usuall boring link to the most in depth review of it I can find..

  • Of course, you could hang on a month or so extra and get Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard instead. Be twice as productive, experience less bugs and annoying crashes, enjoy better security and more frequent OS updates - have a fantastic user interface experience even on older hardware :D

No windows activation. No windows genuine "advantage" (what were those again... i've forgotten?). No office genuine "advantage"... lots and lots and lots of "advantage", appppparently.

.NET is the future of development and is perhaps the best thing Redmond have produced in years, but Vista just re-invents the wheel (and breaks stuff). Lets leave the innovation to Apple.
